The USA previously ignored Pakistan\'s and Afghanistan\'s huge opium crops because the crops funded the war against the Soviet Union. The US aid the last year made the USA the largest giver of aid to Afghanistan. No matter who this US aid was given to in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, this aid freed up other Taliban money, resources, and manpower. This was used for weapons and people to fight its opposition. And since Afghanistan did not destroy its stockpiles of opium, its lessening of opium growing (to get the US aid) only acted as a price support of its stockpiles of opium. Thus US aid acted as a farm subsidy for better opium prices for the region.
