celebrating Palestinians? der Spiegel article translation

by Christine (ottilie [at] hotmail.com)
there was an internet hoax originating from a Brazilian who claimed to have 1991 footage reused by CNN of Palestinians celebrating the 9/11 crash, however, this Der Spiegel article shows that significant parts of that footage were dishonestly made.
http://www.spiegel.de/politik/ausland/0,1518,158625,00.html

Here is an article in german. Look at it for the photos if you can\'t read it. Der Spiegel is like a 270 page version of Newsweek without as many fluffy stories. Here is a rough translation:
Captions say: 1. rejoicing in front of the camera - for a piece of cake and 2. children celebrate the assassinations in front of the camera while passersby behind them are uninterested.

Only a few hours after the assassinations in New York and Washington, the TV showed pictures worldwide of the unrestricted jubilation of Palestinians. Now, it seems like a part of these pictures were possibly set up, the rest old.

Hamburg: Kids celebrate, a woman with black headcloth and glasses raises her arms high in joy, a man hugs and kisses passersby: Jerusalem streetscene on 9/11 on the day of the assassinations in New York and Washington. Pictures that went around the world. Pictures that shocked many. This was a day when the hunger for information and filmmaterial was unrivaled, and so these records or image were broadcast over and over again with the caption \"these Palestinians celebrate the deaths in the USA\". Now then, 10 days after the slaughter, the magazine ARD Panorama reports that it is possible that there is another truth about these pictures - and it\'s possible that they were even planned or set up.

Jubilating Palestinians were filmed by two news agencies - Reuters and AP. TV watchers were only shown a few seconds of this material a week ago. In total, four minutes of footage was distributed to the stations. The Panorama editor, Annette Krueger-Spitta saw the same group (of celebrants) in the film from both agencies. \"This is ultimately \'brisantes\' (breezy?) material\". With that, the material was ascertained to be untrue.

The final edits of the film in the past week have aroused or created the impression that many people were out in the streets partying. There was no pan shot that showed the scene of the entire street, but it was small groups of people. In the material that was run, there was indeed very presumably totals (?) that showed clearly that only a small number of the Palestinians on the scene celebrated while the rest went by in the background unmoved. \"The woman in the black headcloth said that she danced around in front of the camera because the man promised her a piece of cake\", said Krueger-Spitta. The Palestinian woman explained that she was horrified when she saw in which context her jubilation would be portrayed. She truly abhors the attacks on Washington and New York. What is the truth?

Already in the past week excited emails were sent around the globe regarding a similar story or case: CNN broadcasted 10 year old material to attest to the celebration of the palestinians. A Brazilian student, Marcio, had written a letter on Wednesday to the website Indymedia, an unedited media-platform, that he had proof that the pictures shown on 11. September were really falsified. The footage was really from 1991 and showed the friendly celebrating of palestinians after the Iraqi entry into Kuwait. One of his docents(?) had video from that time that compared with with the actual reports. Both pictures were identical. CNN was inventing a image of the Palestinians.
Only two days later, Marcio reported back. The information was only an impression that he had given, but his high school teacher could not verify his evidence. However, it was too late. Until today, emails with the false information have circulated the Netz, and until today have evoked much reaction, also with us, always with a worried reference to readers. CNN International placed a vehement reproach against Spiegel-Online. Also, Reuters TV, that had supplied CNN with its footage, hurried to create a message of reproach. Even on the website Indymedia, it expressed doubt about the blame. A reader explained that the footage couldn\'t have come from 1991 because a 1995 was pictured in front of a rowhouse.

I heard they offered pieces of cake to the suicide bombers before they went on their mission to kill Israelis.

Does that mean that they are innocent and that nothing bad happened?
