About the San Francisco Independent Media Center
SF-IMC : Indymedia : About SF-IMC

The San Francisco Independent Media Center (SF-IMC) is a media development and publishing organization based in the SF Bay Area. SF-IMC is part of a global network of Independent Media Centers.

Our Mission Statement

The following ideas guide us as an independent, non-commercial collective:

  • Journalism: We strive to expand usefulness of journalists in movements for social change. We facilitate the delivery of timely, high-quality news stories, in-depth reports, briefs, and investigations on myriad issues about or of interest to people in San Francisco and beyond.
  • Infrastructure: We are working towards the development of a mature, international independent media network that will rival major news outlets in coverage, scope, and influence. This will best be done by providing people with access to the best technology to publish news and exchange information while maintaining an editorial policy that can continue to build credibility with readers.
  • Positioning: We serve as an open resource for a broad group of people and organizations on the Left to publish news media and debate issues in an effort to increase our understanding and effectiveness in real-world struggles.
Independent Journalism
  • To encourage the production and distribution of high-quality, credible news in print, video, audio and other digital multimedia formats.
  • To provide local independent journalists with a means to network, coordinate coverage, discuss the news and critique each other's work.
  • To provide independent journalists with the means to share resources, skills and ideas.
Unique and Relevant Coverage
  • To provide coverage of relevant events that are ignored or poorly covered by corporate media.
  • To provide coverage of people's struggles around the world and to provide those without a voice a means to share their stories and ideas with the world.
  • To provide edited audio, video, and print stories of the above on the internet for independent media outlets and the general public.
Media Education
  • To encourage an ongoing critique of the media on the part of our readers and contributors.
  • To provide a place where people can discuss the news and debate issues relevant to current events.
  • To encourage participation in the process of creating news, knowledge and history.
Solidarity and Networking
  • To build links with independent media, research groups and other organizations that share our goals.
  • To support independent news organizations and the free flow of information.
  • To encourage a world where globalization is not about homogeneity and exploitation, but rather, about diversity and cooperation.
