UC Berkeley Students Protest for Palestinian Liberation
Over 200 UC Berkeley students and activist groups gathered and blocked Sather Gate in solidarity with the Palestinians.
In response to the continuing occupation and escalating violence against the Palestinian people, Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) held a rally at Sather Gate (on campus) Tuesday at noon.
The rally was ment to protest the checkpoints that exist in Israel and the West Bank's landscape.
Yalda Afshar, who was leading the chants, explains, "we are here in response to the continuing occupation and escalating violence against the Palestinian people. In solidarity with the 4.2 million refugees, the thousand that are injured, and the over 350 dead. As a group, SJP is demanding that the rights of the Palestinian people under international law be recognized and implemented, that the Palestinians be granted the right of return, and that the US halt military aid which has up to date escalated $9 billion." (contact information was on press release. phone number: 664-0346 (home) and 551-3323 (cell))
SJP used the three part gate as a symbol. The center, which is over 30 feet wide was completely blocked by over 150 protesters sitting, wearing all black and holding signs.
The right was a mock Israeli checkpoint in which passage was very difficult and mock IDF and Palestinian cofrontations were set up.
The left, however, was left open and marked 'Israeli'.
There were also, thousands of flyers that were being circulated explaining the significance of what was happening.
Afshar voiced fears that Ariel Sharon, who won the elections, will cut off peace negotiations and take a more militant position toward Palestine.
"It's rather scary, but possible that Sharon wants to wage a war with the Palestinians. Sharon does not have the best reputation with the Palestinians, as was obvious in the 1982 Lebanon invasion."
The event coincided with teh Israeli prime minster election.
"We want to bring the issue of Palestine's disenfranchisement to the public on the Israeli election day," said student Greg Hoadley (quote obtained from Daily Cal).
Palestinian supporters were also joined by pro-Israelis from various campus groups. They joined the tail of the protest holding up Israeli flags behind the Palestinian protesters.

Apply the old "McCarthy Vietnam bodybag" principle to this current Middle East war and the numbers show exactly who's doing the most mayhem. The Israelis kill 5 palestinians for every Israeli killed by the Palestinians. Maybe I'm missing something here but to us in Europe that means that the Netanyahous and Baraks and Sharons are the real butchers as they shoot journalists ,ambulances, bulldoze homes and villages and then they ask whay the world hates them.
Only you Americans for now can stop the Israelis, your tax dollars are financing this Israel terror.

"What's the difference between Sharon and Hitler?"
Hitler killed Jews. Sharon is a Jew.
A better question: The difference between Arafat and Hitler?
Hitler killed Jews. Arafat is killing Jews. There's your parallel.
Assaults on Jews and their synagogues and schoolchildren's busses throughout France reminiscent of pogroms in the 40s.
Masses running through the streets of Calgary chanting "Death to Jews"
Jewish Women getting assaulted for wearing a star of David, and a Hassidic Man assaulted on the streets of Berlin for being Jewish
A Pogrom on the streets of Kiev in the Ukraine
Assaults and vandalism against Jews in Berkeley.
When is enough enough -- Seems like all some people can do is criticize Israel's "violations of human rights" but Jewish lives and well being is very cheap in some people's estimation.
STOP THE VIOLENCE STOP THE HATE == THE REAL FORMULA FOR PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE
Many people -- not just those deserving Israelis -- will die on both sides in this war. That's why it's so ugly, and many of us actually want it to stop. As long as you are butchering Palestinians, I will expect to open the papers and read that your children, too, have lived their last days.
Clear enough?
You are becoming the evil you despise.
Not all Jews even support Israel so how dare you say that you expect to pick up the paper and see about dead Jews. You should be ashamed! That is hatemongering and you know it.
If you want to talk about atrocities, talk about the Holocaust Survivor and 20 others blown up observing the Holiday of Pesach, talk about the firebombing of the Synagogue in Tunisia. You should be ashamed. I grieve the loss of innocent life on all sides -- why don't you?
A reading of DD's posts reveals DD's one and only tactic for discussion.
DD brands anyone who does not share DD's views as a hatemonger and anti-semite. DD reads words in posts that are not written.
The site of dead Jews does not make me happy, though I somewhat "enjoy" reading about dead Israelis. There is a difference between the two, says DD. So let me make it clear: I do not cry for the deaths of the militarized Israeli warmonger nazis. They wanna fight the natives for their land, well that's gonna cost some casualties.
Let us cheer our Palestinian brothers and sisters in their unyielding struggle for victory against the European oppressor. Let us have one, two, many Palestines. Israeli lies and massacres will not stop justice from arriving to the Holy Land.
This is called "changing the subject."

Well if you addressed my concerns and showed enlightenment and tolerance we could get on to the fact that Arafat never has abided by the arms agreements at Oslo. He contravened them almost from day 1 according to a US military expert in an article on Slate. If there wasn't all these suicide bombings of innocent Israelis at Passover seders and of children at pizzerias and discos and ice cream parlors, maybe we could get to ACTUALLY IMPLEMENTING OSLO. But then again, Arafat has no intention of doing that because he's so used to being a terrorist he either doesn't know how to or doesn't want to be a statesman. Defend that.
Would you, if had been you? Oslo offered Bantustans. Would you live in a Bantustan?
A small state is better than no-state. If the Palestinians had formed a country when they had a chance in the partition deals they could be a lot better off than they are with a functioning economy, stable society and peaceably coexisting with its neighbor Israel.
A little history. The Palestinians rejected a majority of the land in the Peel Plan, they rejected a smaller state in 48 because they hated the Jews in Israel so much they decided they'd rather go to war with them than live with them. Haj Amin cast his lot with Hitler and genocide against the Jews and later urging his people to drive the Jews into the sea.
Actions have consequences. Because the Palestinians didn't take the best deal they could get and decided to threaten the very existence of their prospective neighbors, they have to deal with the fact that the only land they are likely to get is the West Bank, Gaza and Arab East Jerusalem. Peace, a functioning economy and hope for the future is better than violence adnauseum IMHO.
Nah, it's better to die free... or to die having taken out a few of the pharaoh's children.
