More Tree-Sits in Humboldt County
More activists taking to the canopy to resist Maxxam/Pacific Lumber's destructive logging.
As Maxxam/Pacific Lumber continue their aggressive quest to liquidate the last of their old growth holdings in Humboldt County, activists continue to rise up into the canopy of these ancient trees to peacefully resist. Two new tree-sits have gone up within the past week, virtually over night. The new focus is in the tiny town of Freshwater, where despite evidence of off-the-chart sediment levels in the water caused by destructive clear-cut logging practices, the California Department of Forestry is giving Maxxam the go-ahead to clear-cut an additional 500 acres per year in this tiny Humboldt community.
Approximately 9000 acres have been cut in Freshwater since Charles Hurwitz took over the Pacific Lumber Company in a hostile takeover in 1985.
The new tree-sits are the most public that Humboldt has seen in a while. They sit beside a public road in the second unit of a four-unit Timber Harvest Plan that is slated to clear-cut 184 acres. Because of easy public access and visibility, local activists are hoping to avoid the dangerous and life-threatening methods previously used against tree-sitters by Maxxam/PL. Public support, as well as the roundtable discussions that came out of the
David “Gypsy” Chain wrongful death settlement, may help curb the violence against activists.
Local residents have complained of their once clean drinking water being poisoned with the herbicides and napalm-type chemicals that PL dumps on the land, after they clear-cut, to burn the mess they leave. Record-breaking flooding is also becoming an issue as normal rainfall in this temperate rainforest is causing floods due to the clear-cut land’s inability to hold the water. Add this up with extensive topsoil erosion due to years of destructive logging and you have the current state of affairs in Freshwater – a crisis situation.
A ten-year projection map that came out of the inappropriately named Habitat Conservation Plan shows Maxxam/PL’s logging intentions for Humboldt County. If the plans of this map are allowed to go through, the area of Freshwater will be devastated. Masses of clear-cuts joined together by new clear-cuts are the plan in Freshwater. Resistance is essential to stop the insane, greed-driven logging practices of Maxxam/PL.
To get involved in this crucial struggle, call North Coast Earth First! at (707) 825-6598. Donations can be sent to PO Box 28, Arcata, California, 95518.

Thanks for asking and allowing for clarification.
A concerned citizen who moved to Northern Humboldt county from los angeles not Republican dominated beach communities in Orange County. Stop being afraid of southern california they want to help.
PS. Sometimes we have a hard time reaching beyond the Redwood Curtain, so any help with outreach is much needed!
OK, how do you like BARON? Baron von Chef, then.
And whazzup with this stupid bee-otch who foresoke her family and calls herself "remedy", up a friggin tree? Who, has freinds give her food and drink. Does the tree have plumbing? Is she then just crapping off a 4x8 sheet of plywood installed into an alleged 1200 year-old tree? What about indecent exposure, littering, environmental contamination, endangering an antique tree, criminal tresspass, invasion of privacy, being an idiot, and attitude unbecoming a Socialist?
