Twenty-three war veterans, teachers, students and others opposed to war in Iraq were arrested today at a rally at the 5th and I Federal Building in Sacramento.

This action is one of many local actions taking place around the country during the coming weeks. According to the Pledge of Resistance, more than 5,000 people have pledged to engage in nonviolent civil disobedience in order to prevent or halt the death and destruction that U.S. military action will bring to the people of Iraq.

"We intend to draw a line for the Bush Administration with our bodies, to oppose this illegal war." said a statement released by the Iraq Pledge of Resistance.

Today's rally was co-sponsored by numerous peace groups

The man gives the order to move away or get busted! How come cops always over dress when their going to "protect" our community from us peace loving activists? Whew, those guys must of been hot, because the weather was pretty warm. Maybe it helps them feel more secure! ;)

The "van" couldn't hold all the arrestees, so the cops took the first 8 or so people over to the jail and then came back to get more. They spent a few minutes trying to figure out how they could get all of the rest of the protesters in the van so they wouldn't have to make a third trip. i told the cop they could let the last two people sit in the front and save you guys some trouble by driving themselves to the jail...he laughed! ;)

These four gals were great! They were last in line and they kept singing and singing the whole time the cops were handcuffing them. Very inspiring!

Here's the crowd watching the protestors being put into the van. There's that gorgeous baby again! Oh, and, there's MItch, the KPFA reporter, covering this important action. i was impressed with the number of photographers and reporters there. Lots of cameras! That's good!

i've never been arrested ..well, not this lifetime anyway! i so admire people who do civil disobedience. i love this photo...she looks vunerable with her hands behind her like that...and at the same time...she looks so powerful, so open, so clear and ready to put her life on the line to help the people of Iraq and the U.S.

Behind the darken windows they sat. They could probably see us, but we couldn't see them. i wonder what they talked about in the van...or did the cops make them keep quiet...or maybe they didn't want to talk...didn't need to talk..
