Pictures From August 9th Anti-War Protest

by Z
Several hundred activists gathered at the 24th St. Bart station around noon and marched to Civic Center in a protest against the Occupation of Iraq.

As the protest moved up Market St towards the Civic Center, it met up with a group from Veterans for Peace that was having its national convention at the War Memorial (http://www.veteransforpeace.org/) Some of the protest went into the Veterans for Peace convention while the rest listened to a few speakers in front of City Hall and then marched to the Powell St BART station.

"The San Francisco anti-occupation protest was sponsored by Global Exchange and Not In Our Name and was endorsed by Bay Area United Against War, CodePink: Women for Peace, International Action Center, International Socialist Organization, Jewish Voice for Peace, Military Families Speak Out, Presente! Affinity Cluster, Religious Witness with Homeless People, United for Peace and Justice, Veterans for Peace, and others."

"On May 1, 2003 President Bush, in a televised speech from an aircraft carrier, announced the end of major combat operations in Iraq. 100 days later, on August 9, San Francisco anti-war activists [marked] the date with a march that could signal the beginning of the movement against the occupation of Iraq. "People really need to take the opportunity on August 9 to evaluate the first 100 days of the occupation. Our evaluation is that with innocent Iraqis and U.S. soldiers being killed every single day, this occupation needs to end now," said Andrea Buffa of Global Exchange, one of the groups organizing the protest. "100 days after President Bush declared the major combat in Iraq officially over, SF Bay Area anti-war groups [took] to the streets to say no to war and occupation!
Not only were thousands of innocent Iraqis killed during the war, but 100 days into the occupation, U.S. troops and Iraqi civilians are being killed every single day.
The cost of the occupation has skyrocketed to $3.9 billion per month - while our schools and important social services programs have their budgets slashed. And a flood of government leaks and media reports confirm that the anti-war movement was right all along: The Bush administration lied about the alleged Iraqi threat to scare people into backing their war.
