News Letter Dated August 14, 2003

Hello All! Included in this newsletter are updates and stories about our legal/political struggle (Come the Supervisors Meeting on August 19th in the afternoon!), our upcoming events, and a call for electronic action.

City Services Committee Endorses Resolution by 2-1 Vote:
This morning at the City Services Committee Meeting heard more testimony in support of the SFLR Resolution and voted to support it. First Supe Fiona Ma had some concerns in regards to the tension between city and federal politics, and had concerns about what the resolution would do. City Attorney Lakey responded by making an analysis of what exactly the resolution says and the new changes and how they affect the legislation. He was actually somewhat sympathetic (a contrast to the last city attorney we dealt with, John Kennedy) and fairly stated our case in a way that downplayed the political risk. Amy Laitinen, aid to Supervisor Gonzalez gave a statement that was extremely supportive (Peter Franck and I coached her a little beforehand!) and very articulate and well received by Supervisor Dufty. The floor was then opened for public comment. About ten to fifteen people stood up and made comments, most were djs, some were just supporters, and one representative from the Radical Women.
The Supes then gave their final statements: Chairman Dufty made a supportive statement in which he described how he was working with Castro Halloween Celebration and how he was working with radio stations to air Public Service Announcements about having a safe Halloween and finding that most of the stations were owned by Clear Channel or Infinity and how surprised he was as to the extent of the conglomeration. Supe Fiona Ma then cast the one dissenting vote stating that she felt the Supes should not get involved in federal politics Recently she received flack for an incident involving a Vietnamese flag and from that had been instructed to stay out of policy on the federal level. Her stance in this writer’s opinion was one of extreme caution. Newsom came next and surprised a lot of people in the room by saying something to the effect of: even though he gets bagged on all the time on the station, he does listen to it and likes it a lot. And for that reason and all the democracy/free speech issues intrinsic he supports the resolution. So it passed 2-1.
They then moved to put it on the August 19th Full Board agenda. We should come out in numbers for that!
