On Tuesday, September 7, about 300 masked rebels constructed barricades in the streets and distributed leaflets outside of the University of Santiago to commemorate the upcoming 31st anniversary of the 1973 U.S.-backed fascist coup.
The rebels threw firebombs at riot police water cannons when they arrived and then retreated to the university grounds, which by social custom police do not enter. The riot police also fired tear gas during the clashes.
In Chile, September 11th is marked by street clashes and acts of sabotage every year.
