Palestinian witnesses reported that Rania Iyad Aram was killed by random machine gun fire from Israeli soldiers near an army checkpoint close to the neighboring Jewish settlement of Ganei Tal.
An Israeli army official said that the incident was still under investigation.
Thursday afternoon, several mortar shells landed near the IDF checkpoint that secures the Jewish settlement of Morag in the Southern Gaza Strip, wounding nine Israelis, two of them seriously, the Israeli army said.
"We know of several incidents of militants launching mortars at settlements in the area, and soldiers fired back in each case," an Israeli official said.
Late Wednesday, some 40 Israeli tanks and armored vehicles were seen moving into the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank. Witnesses said that Israeli soldiers exchanged fire with Palestinian fighters. There were no casualties reported.
Earlier this week, the Israeli army launched a two-day offensive in Khan Younis, claiming that the operation is aimed at stopping Palestinian fighters from firing Qassam rockets at Jewish settlements. At least seventeen Palestinians have lost their lives in the deadly operation.
Israel has frequently targeted West Bank towns and refugee camps since the Palestinian intifada or uprising started in 2000.

Israeli deaths are given more prominence than local deaths. But Palestinian girls shot in the head by bullets we gave for free to Israelis is not a matter of discussion.
But here is the story from October 28 buried in a yahoo images folder.
Stories of Palestinian girls killed this way are notoriously difficult to find in the mainstream media even though they are awfully too common.
Notice the bucket and blanket under the donkey's head as the elderly Palestinian owner tried to comfort it in it's final moments.
According to Palestinian witnesses, eight-year-old Rania Iyad Aram of the Khan Younis refugee camp was was shot and killed by IDF soldiers overnight Wednesday near the neighboring settlement of Ganei Tal on her way to school.
The IDF spokesman said that overnight a number of mortars and small arms fire were directed at the Israeli communities and the IDF positions in Gush Katif. The soldiers returned fire, but did not verify hitting anyone and so the army could not confirm Palestinian claims.
However, speaking on condition of anonymity, an IDF official said the incident was under investigation.

Shall we add the details left out? The rainy season has begun, and while we might think 1/3 inch trivial, not so in the South of Israel-Palestine (they are rescuing people trapped by flash floods). The incident described in the article took pace in very heavy fog.
Under cover of this fog, mortar and small arms fire opened up on a guardpost. I think it was one killed and three wounded (Israeli soldiers) and of course the Israelis were firing back -- but fog, remember, so at muzzle flashes and the sound of the mortar "thump" << and BTW, there must have been a brave Palestinian spotter risking a "short" or other friendly fire from his own side >> So not exactly "random fire" and no mystery how bystanders could be hit.
STOP! This isn't discussing the rightness or wrongness of a guard post there in the first place. I might suprise you, think that the Israelis should pull the hell out, evacuate the "settlers", let the Palestinians form their own state, etc.
There is no evidence that the mortar incident happened at the same time as the killing of Rania. On the contrary, eyewitnesses say she was killed as she was going to school.
What I can't understand is why people from all walks of life believe it is there responsibility to defend Israel by obfuscating cold blooded murder like this to make it look like an accident.
Israel is a racist colonial state with as much "Right to Exist" as racist Apartheid South Africa. Equality for all is the only solution. Separate but equal has been shown to be non-viable and no one would tolerate a white separatist, supremacist state. So why all the excuses and defense for Israel (which is little different except that the perpetrators are considered "victims" and thus given a license to kill and are routinely defended beyond reason).
Here is a video of another girl that was shot (on October 12). She was critically injured.

And there were many more. Including another girl shot in the head while making bread with her mother in her front yard on Oct. 4 and another girl shot in the head twice as she layed injured from a bullet to the leg. And many more before those. You can't tell me these are "Accidents!"
If this incident turns out to be murder, you will probably move right to the next alleged murder with the same certitude you're sounding your accusation now.
Is the bare fact that there exists a routine of girls being shot in their heads sufficient grounds to determine that this particular girl was murdered? Is such a pattern -- on its own -- enough to establish that its a product of a deliberate policy?
Who has the right to decide this case was murder except police officers that work on the case, not unlike the previous case where the company commander was arrested allegedly for withholding crucial details during his initial testimony?
