Unknown to most of the public, there is a growing crisis within the workers’ comp industry. According to the new film "Almost Broken", the State Fund insurance company has covered up a scheme to prevent injured worker Larry Nign from receiving compensation for his injury of over 13 years ago. This film was produced after Christine Pietz a member of IATSE 33 in Los Angeles was injured at Disney and began her own long battle to receive compensation for her injuries.
"Almost Broken" through interviews and investigative journalism tells the story of how the deregulation of the Workers’ Comp under SB899 has also added to the corruption crisis in the workers’ comp system. District Attorneys and judges have been implicated in failing to pursue corruption by the worker’s comp insurance industry despite a growing amount of evidence of misdeeds.
The video is being screened by The California Coalition For Workers Memorial Day (http://www.workersmemorialday.com), which is organizing a statewide protest of injured and disabled workers on April 28, 2005 at 11:00 AM at the state capitol. Hundreds of thousands of workers are injured annually in California and the video is critical to understand the problems that they are facing.
Unions and health and safety groups in the South Bay are also involved in this initiative and there will be a discussion by workers after the film.
