Vigil, Tenderloin March, Demands to City Hall

by AAG (info [at] mashriq.org)
Protest, March and Demands tomorrow at 8:30pm at UN Plaza: Vigil, March and Demands to end the War Against the Poor from Iraq to San Francisco
Only you can take a stand against the war on the poor. August 6th is the anniversary of the start of the war against poor Iraqis by Americans, the dropping of the Hiroshima bomb, and the day that people put the connections together between corporate warfare and the local crackdown on the Poor in San Francisco.

END THE WAR AGAINST THE POOR

Vigil at UN Plaza drawing attention to the way the US uses the UN to wage war. March through the Tenderloin to draw attention to the lack of infrastructure building while corporations make millions in San Francisco. Demands to the Board of Supervisors and the Mayor to change their policies regarding the poor in our midst and corporate benefits we give major corps to use our resources for their own profits. Reclaim the Hood. Right now police are cracking down on the poor in the Tenderloin, right now people are dieing in Iraq so Chevron can make big money. Right now we need to take a first step to end the war against the poor. We give the city 30 days notice tomorrow night before civil disobedience and direct action will start in this city to End the War on the Poor.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE         August 1, 2001

Dallas Mosque to Host Hiroshima, Iraq Anniversary Observances Interfaith panel will question aggression targeting civilians
The twin anniversaries of the dropping of an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, and the beginning of economic sanctions imposed on Iraq will be observed Sunday afternoon, August 5, at the Dallas Central Mosque in Richardson.
The afternoon will feature two versions of a BBC video on the effect of economic sanctions on Iraq, a presentation from the President of the American Muslim Association and an interfaith panel. The full 70-minute BBC documentary, “Paying The Price: Killing The Children of Iraq,” will be shown at 2:00 p.m. From 3:15-3:45 p.m., Agha Saeed, President of the American Muslim Association, will give an address on U.S. policy in the Middle East.
An edited 30-minute version of the BBC video will be shown at 5:45 p.m. The panel discussion, beginning at 6:30 p.m. will address the question, “Are acts of aggression against civilian populations justifiable?” Panelists will include Imam Yousuf Kavakci of the Dallas Central Mosque, educator and Methodist minister Rev. Neill McFarland and Jewish educator

August 6 marks 56 years since the United States Air Force dropped the first nuclear weapon ever targeted against a city, Hiroshima, Japan. The nuclear blast killed 66,000 people in an instant, and many more than that later. The same day in 1990 marked the beginning of eleven years of ongoing economic sanctions against Iraq. The United Nations and other
organizations have determined the sanctions to be directly responsible for the deaths of an estimated 1.5 million Iraqis.
All events are open to the public. Sponsoring organizations include the Dallas Peace Center, the Committee in Solidarity with the People of Iraq, the American Muslim Alliance and the Association of Muslim Social Scientists. The Dallas Central Mosque is located at 840 Abrams, about 1 mile north of LBJ freeway.
Participants will be encouraged to join a fast called by the National Network to End the War in Iraq during daylight hours on Monday, August 6, to pray to the God of life and to make calls to elected officials. A breaking of the fast will be held at sunset (approximately 8:30 p.m.) Monday evening Aug 6 at the Dallas Peace Center, 4301 Bryan St., Suite 202, with traditional Middle Eastern refreshments. Larry Kerschner, Brian Mack and Kristine Swenson will be doing a 10 day water only fast from Aug 3-12 with a daily vigil in front of the Federal Office Bldg in Seattle.

Interfaith Network of Concern for the People of Iraq (INOC)

                4759 15th Avenue NE;   Seattle, Washington 98105
                            August 1, 2001
Dear friends,

"Our resignations [Hans von Sponeck and Denis Halliday] were in protest  over a flawed international Iraq policy and the conversion of the UN from an  instrument of conflict resolution to an instrument of conflict."  (Hans von  Sponeck, July 28, 2001 Irish Times)

WE NEED YOUR PRESENCE, IF AT ALL POSSIBLE,  FOR THE AUGUST 3-12 EVENTS

Contents of INOC Report:

1.  Ten-day fast for the people of Iraq: August 3 - 12
2.  Saturday, Aug. 4, INOC meeting
3.  Saturday, August 4 Seafair vigil at Elliott Bay Park
------------------------------------

1.  TEN-DAY FAST FOR THE PEOPLE OF IRAQ: INOC is sponsoring the ten-day fast to support our efforts to educate, and to change the devastating effects of  economic sanctions against the people of Iraq.  The purpose of the fast is a
spiritual one - to be in solidarity with the people of Iraq.  The fast is being lead by three Seattle area residents: Larry Kerschner, Brian Mack and Kristine Swenson, who violated the sanctions (and thereby U.S. law) in the past year.  One of them will be present at the Seattle Federal Building (915 Second Avenue downtown) as a vigil from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day. August 3 through August 10. A prayer service will be held there each weekday at noon.

2.  SATURDAY, 4:00 p.m. AUGUST 4, INOC MEETING: At Keystone UCC (5019 Keystone Place North) Larry Kerschner will speak on his reasons for observing the fast, and Phil Steger is coming to report with slides on his recent
trip to Iraq.  You'll recall that Phil traveled to Tal A'far to investigate the deaths of the 23 teenage boys killed recently by a missile while playing soccer.  We will receive instructions for car-pooling to the Elliott Bay Park vigil prior to adjourning by 5:30 p.m.

3.  SATURDAY, 6:00 - 8:30 pm, AUGUST 4, SEAFAIR VIGIL AT ELLIOTT BAY PARK:
The destroyer USS Paul F. Foster, which fired the first Tomahawk missiles into Iraq during the Gulf War, has since enforced the blockade and assisted in the continued bombing of Iraq, should not find itself welcome in the port of any city when its role clearly is to wage war against civilian urban populations, whether they be in Basra or Seattle.  The morality this ship
represents is bankrupt and must be addressed.

Join us at the North end of Elliott Bay park (access is from West Galer Street), within sight of the USS Paul F. Foster, which is to be moored near Pier 90.  Car-pooling is advised due to limited parking spaces at Elliott Bay park.  Look for the replica of the 50 ft. Trident II missile, a weapon of mass destruction we will use to make another weapon of mass destruction more
tangible for the people of Seattle: the economic blockade of Iraq.

Washington D.C.

At the Pentagon on August 6, The Atlantic Life Community will be demonstrating their concern for the lives of the people of Iraq, and their sacred lands, so devastated by that institution.

OPENING OF THE ‘PEACE POSTERS’ WINNERS EXHIBIT – Sponsored by LIONS CLUB INTERNATIONAL
La Crosse Children’s Museum With remarks by Mayor John Medinger
On August 6, 1945, the U.S. dropped the first atomic bomb ever deliberately used on a human population, on the city of Hiroshima, Japan.

On August 9, 1945, the U.S. dropped the second such atomic bomb, on Nagasaki, Japan. Over 200,000 people died on the day of these bombings, and the death toll has never stopped.

Now there are perhaps 25,000 nuclear bombs in arsenals all over the world. The  U.S. possesses more than any other  country.

Let us gather to remember what was done, and reflect on how this affects us still today.

Let us gather to send our hopes for peace out into the world, for this day and all future days.
