What You Can Raise Instead of the US Flag-

by VVAW AI (vvawai [at] oz.net)
The U.S. flag and its colors are being used in an attempt to whip up patriotism and convince people that there is a "ground swell" of support for the U.S.'s "War on terrorism". People who want to express their grief for the victims of the 9/11 attacks, as well as the victims of the current bombing campaign against Afghanistan, should put down their flag and instead take up the GREEN & BLACK campaign
WHAT CAN YOU RAISE INSTEAD OF THE U.S. FLAG?
--WEAR GREEN AND BLACK
The U.S. flag and its colors are being used in an attempt to whip up patriotism and convince people that there is a "ground swell" of support for the U.S.'s "War on terrorism". People who want to express their grief for the victims of the 9/11 attacks, as well as the victims of the current bombing campaign against Afghanistan, should put down their flag and instead take up the GREEN & BLACK campaign

GREEN has been used in areas around the country to support people who come under racist attacks. It identifies us as allies so that people know who to go to for protection should they need it.
BLACK symbolizes loss of life, sadness, mourning. In this case, the loss of life of thousands in the 9/11 attacks, the current bombing raids, as well as the thousands more innocent people who die at the hands of U.S. imperialism around the world every day.
We call on you to stand with the people of the world against this war

Protestors have been demonized by the media and counter-protestors as being un-American and anti-democratic. To the contrary, we are actually trying to bring this country in line with true democratic principles. Perhaps it's time to steal the symbols of the constitution back from the fascists in congress and the white house. I am suggesting that protestors liberate the symbols of Amerikan authority for their own use:
Imagine 1000's of anti-globalization or anti-war protestors taking to the street armed with Amerikan flags and other American symbols. Just think how it would look to the press and to mom and pop back home, watching the police throw tear gas and beat protestors that all carried these symbols. It would really cook their noodles. Not to mention it would nullify the counter-protestors who would be thrown into confusion. It would be even more confusing to local media. Let me know what you think.

Red, white, and blue might do. Once through.
Coordination creates sensation. Drama for yer mama.
Symbols work in broad, brief streaks. Banner worship is for freaks.
Talk, and listen; organize. Patient pressure wins the prize,
if anything will. Make art and love, and just say no to men in SUVs.

Changing the symbolic meaning of the flag is the easy part. Changing its historical meaning for others is not so easy. Many folks want to tell the dark side of the American story to those who ignore it, so that we all might be better prepared for the decisions of today. Alienation from reality is not an American birthright. Alertness is required for any semblance of freedom. People need to open up and study the world through elders and the writings of ancestors. Pretend you're an alien for a while. Then situate yourself and feel your roots.

i'll stick w/ the green and black, thank you. i'd rather have someone mistakenly think i'm a primitivist anarchist than a patriot. but somehow i doubt this will catch on or be recognized.

wrapping ourselves in the flag, even w/ a peace sign on it, is wrapping ourselves in nationalism, and shows our support of a racist, patriarchal, ecologically devastating state. do what you want, but recognize what it can mean.
