Listening for a Change-
Peace Activists Try a New Approach

On Wednesday, Halloween, October 31st at Lytton Plaza in downtown Palo Alto from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. peace activists will try a new approach to communicating with the public. There will still be banners, signs, petitions, and leaflets, but no chants and marches, instead peace activists will pull up chairs and invite people to speak about their feelings and thoughts about the 9/11 tragedy and our government's response. They will write down what people feel and think, and ask, "How do you think we can defuse terrorism?" and "How can we make a safer, better world for our children, all children?"

An organizer explains:

"I was in the big Peace demonstrations in Washington D.C. and San Francisco, and I've encountered some very angry, emotional people, the anti-anti-war demonstrators. To defuse violence and anger, listening is a very powerful non-violent technique. Often people are violent because they perceive that they or their worldview are being threatened. Respectful listening can be healing, and encourage them to engage in constructive dialogue. Appreciative inquiry, encourages creative thought towards realizing higher human goals; when people can engage their creativity in helping to solve world problems, they feel empowered, energized and can actually accomplish a great deal."

"We'd like to do this every Wednesday, but since this Wednesday is Halloween, we are encouraging people to wear costumes and be extra creative in expressing their messages to the public. Emma Goldman said, 'If I can't dance. I don't want to be part of your revolution.' We would like to make this as fun, creative, and engaging as possible for peace activists, and the public."

Evening vigils are also being held in Palo Alto and the "Listening Project" will continue each Wednesday until the "War on Terrorism" ends.
