US Rejects War Crimes Tribunal. Hm.

by herr bush
maybe some of these patriots could explain why the whole world wants war crimes trials --- but the u.s. frequently ignores or attacks these efforts. i'm sure it is not because of how many war criminals we harbor. henry kissinger is sweating.

Meanwhile, the US State Department -- taking advantage of the frenzy and confusion that followed the terrorist acts -- endorsed the American Service-members Protection Act (ASPA) on November 5. The legislation authorises the US to use force to "liberate" any US or allied persons detained on behalf of the proposed International Criminal Court
(ICC), which will be based in The Hague, Netherlands. It also prohibits US military assistance to those states that ratify the ICC treaty except for NATO members and some major non-NATO allies.

The New York based Human Rights Watch described the new law as an attempt to undermine the establishment of a permanent war crimes court. "The United States is forging a global coalition against terrorism, and the State Department has just endorsed a bill that authorises an invasion of the
Netherlands," said Richard Dicker, director of the International Justice Programme at HRW. "This makes no sense. It hardly seems like a good moment for the US to be threatening sanctions against dozens of countries simply
because they want to bring to justice the perpetrators of crimes against humanity."

And if anybody has the right to settle your disputes, why that would be me, your protector/bully/busybody. Afterall whats more important; process or my hidden agenda?""

world to sam: your agenda is showing

"Whats more important; peace and cooperation or my way"

world to Sam: enough is enough

Decades past since the U.S. Coast Guard was confiscating ships in the South Cnina Seas, off the Phillipine shores. In the name of..?

before the war on drugs they just said it was America's business because the drugs were almost certainly headed here. Our good boy in the region didn't complain. Duh.

And mr K wouldn't be the only one on the docket. Right and left are of a similar mind of this, particularly the anti-interventionist right (often marginalized as isolationists by the cryptofascist neoliberals). So how do we do international crimes trials and not loose soverignty. (that soverignty is what law stand between the corp-globalists and the rights of American workers and consumers- we should not be ashamed of it, we should insist on extending it to all workers and consumers. this would be the dream of the statue of liberty writ big, not the ego of uncle/bos sam writ petty and mean),

how do we do the right thing togather without the smaller differences that exist on the supposed spectrum of left - right as it exists in the USA getting in the way. (facist bossism is NOT owned by any single end of this spectrum, nor is compassion nor ethical living)

Quit projecting your shaddow. Call evil where it shows, not behind every tree that you don't like the position of. The rest will work out in civil discourse.

How do we try the scum? Well, Spain is doing it in Spanish courts. Nations, soverign nations, are banding to take kissinger and israeli genocidists to court. The same dockets have room for Hussein and others.

Re: the last comment ... yeah, i think so too

this form of organized crime is commonly referred to as a "protection racket" ... as long as you do the bidding of a powerful gang, they will "protect" you from other gangs. however, you are also being "protected" from the retribution of the gang who is supposedly protecting you.

protection rackets, extortion and organized crime is disgusting and needs to be eradicated. when will the so-called "law enforcement" in this country turn inward? never, it seems.

the Rome Treaty establishing the ICC has no provisions for terrorism, so its rather odd to mention that in context.

you should all keep in mind that issues of int'l institutions and multilateralism isn't as simple as "four legs good, two legs bad"

the ad hoc international criminal tribunals provide many benefits (like reconstructing local rules of law) that an international body couldn't. similar examples abound.
