DEATH OF THE WHITE LIBERAL

by Dick Morris
DEATH OF THE WHITE LIBERAL
DEATH OF THE
WHITE LIBERAL

November 7, 2001 -- AS unbelievable as it sounds, a Republican has been elected mayor of New York City. As Mark Green's candidacy died, with him has died the political fortunes of the white liberal - the people who have dominated New York City politics for three-quarters of a century. Ever since LaGuardia's days as mayor, white liberal Democrats have run New York City. But no more.
The reason white liberal Democrats are losing their grip is the juxtaposition of two realities.

One: To win a Democratic Primary, a white liberal must defeat a black or Hispanic challenger. Two: To win the general election, he must try to win back the minority voters who backed the candidate he defeated. The election of 2001 illustrates the increasing difficulty of managing both tasks.

Green ran poorly because he only broke even among Hispanics and could not generate any kind of a decent turnout among blacks. Having defeated Freddy Ferrer by linking him to Al Sharpton, he could not retrace his steps and win the minority vote by the margin a Democrat could usually expect to garner. When Bloomberg masterfully exploited the bitterness of Hispanic voters by running a negative TV ad showing Green attacking Ferrer, the white liberal Democrat could not stem the resulting hemorrhage of Hispanic voters.

It was déjà vu all over again, as Yogi says. In 1997, Ruth Messinger alienated the black vote by beating Al Sharpton in the Democratic primary. But, having turned off the black community in the primary, she could not then attract their support - with any kind of decent turnout - in the general election.

As Andrew Cuomo faces off with Carl McCall in the 2002 Democratic gubernatorial primary, he would do well to study the lessons of Green and Messinger. If Cuomo beats McCall, will he be able to attract black votes and a black turnout after he has achieved the nomination over the corpse of their favorite son. Will a white Democrat's nomination be worth having if he gets it at the price of alienating the minority voters on whom he must depend in November?

In the future, the Democratic Party will only be able to win when it nominates minority candidates. Whites will not be able to win both the primary and the general elections. If New York moves to nonpartisan elections, the white liberal may be able to come back. If not, his day is over.

It's a new era in New York.

As of 2 weeks ago Mike Bloomberg was 20 points behind Mark Green. Finally Rudy Guillani gave in to party pressure and made a commercial for Bloomberg. His popularity rose 20 points in 12 days. Rudy is very popular right now, for a facist.

Mike Bloomberg has claimed that up until a year ago he was a Democrat, switching so he would have a party to run under. He is the most moderate of republicans, and substantially left from Rudy. So I can live with it, I'm a little worried (he having hever served in public office and all) but I'm sure he'll do good enough. Like GW he seems to have the idea of not knowing shit and hiring a bunch of people who do know what they are doing.

This is no great win for the GOP either. Rudy was here before. The interesting thing was to look at all the city council elections 95% were landslide democratic victories. Like 94% to 6% in some cases. So while a republican may be in city hall, everything else belongs to the dems.

The writer is Dick Morris, former Republican aide to Clinton. He's most famous for urging social conservatism like school prayer, anti-gay shit and a general hostility to feminism. He claims americans are in line with the furthest right 10% of fundamentalist christians. An then... he got busted fucking hookers.

Really.

That said, his analysis is absolutely correct. White racism is the issue. When people talk about "ethnic block voting" that's what they mean. White folks would rather vote for a white liberal over a non-white centrist. And they will split over liberal and conservative, with conservatives usually cleaning up the white vote.

It's depressing. I've always thought New Yorkers were just a little bit smarter than other folks. Guess I was wrong. Jersey here I come!

You'll find it's just the same in Jersey. I grew up there. Lived twenty years in Philly, and it was the same thing there.

It occurs to me that as demographic change continues to dilute the power of the "white ethnic" urban voting bloc the scene will change once again. Who knows, maybe someday we'll reach the point where the majority of voters choose candidates on the basis of what they propose to do, rather than on who they are.

And as long as we're dreaming, I'd like a pony and an ice cream soda.

People knew exactly what they were voting for (or against), when they didn't support Freddy Ferrer (or as he called himself in this election, Fernando).

He literally announced he would dismantle Giuliani policies.

His opening bargaining position with the UFT was a 30% pay raise.

He announced he would re-instate the income tax surcharge.

Rev. Sharpton, who just this week finshed paying Pagones for the Brawley defamation verdict, was openly salivating at the prospect of a Ferrer mayoralty, along with his Vieques cell-mate, the Bronx Democratic leader, Roberto Ramirez.

That's why I voted against Ferrer, that's why he lost.

Ferrer/Sharpton/Ramirez then tried to stir up more controversy about the run-off count, until Democratic party state and national leaders knocked their heads with the reminder that 5000 people had just been killed in the WTC, and there just wasn't time for the ususal 'no justice, no peace' sh*t.

Interestingly, after that I read a quote from Sharpton saying (under the assumption that would be a Green victory in the general election), that while they would have 'access' to City Hall, they wouldn't be 'running things'. It belied everything both Sharpton and Ferrer said.

As for why Green lost, it's not his politics, which are almost identical to Bloombert's. Beside the lingering bitterness of the Ferrer crowd, he's just an arrogant assh*le, plain and simple. I'm not sure his mother would vote for him.

For the first time ever, I agree with the IMC's resident right-wing troll. Hi, Pat.
