Bare Breasted Women Stop PL Logging

by Earth Mothers
La Tigresa, the topless poet, and 8 bare breasted forest defenders halted logging of the "Hole in the Headwaters" for several hours. An Armistice Day march is planned for this Sunday 11/11@11

Contact: La Tigresa 415/331 1500 ext 322; Darryl Cherney, Environmentally Sound Promotions 707/923-4949. lv. message at both, calls returned promptly.

Eureka, CA. At 5 am this Friday morning nine women, invoking the name of the Earth Mother bared their breasts and halted over 20 Pacific Lumber and Columbia Helicopter trucks filled with over 30 timber workers and much logging equipment on route to cut large redwoods in an area known as the "Hole in the Headwaters." The topless blockade took place on the Elk River Road, just south of Eureka, CA just before the entrance into an active redwood logging operation. A 1/4 mile long traffic jam of semi-trucks, pick-ups and "crummies" (passenger vans for timber crews) was backed up at the logging gate for two hours before Humboldt County Sheriffs arrived, at which time the women put their shirts back on and departed. There were no arrests.

An 8-mile round trip Armistice Day march is scheduled for this Sunday, November 11 from 11 am to 6 pm through the Headwaters Forest Reserve trail up to the boundary of the "Hole in the Headwaters." Participants plan to bring flags and reclaim the area for the American public. Take Hwy 101 just south of Eureka to Elk River Rd. exit, follow Elk River Rd. 7 miles to end.

Among the bare-breasted women was Dona Nieto, also known as La Tigresa, who has a track record of stopping logging operations in Mendocino County by reading her poems bare-breasted to loggers, including one called "I am the Goddess." That poems, reads in part, "I am the Goddess; I speak now from the mouth of all women. I am the Earth, the cradle of creation....See how the legs of any woman are the pillars of a temple, growing up like redwoods from their roots below the ground. Worship me now!" A support group of a dozen men played drums and sang along with the women, who performed "Amazing Grace," "This Land is our Land," and "America the Beautiful."

"This was the most fun, peaceful and effective action I have ever been involved in," said Maple, one of the young bare breasted forest defenders. "I think that there's something about exposing our innocence and making ourselves highly vulnerable that opened something up in these men's hearts. If not, at least they had fun and we all have stories to tell our grandchildren about the day 9 women stopped logging for two hours with nothing but their voices and their breasts. Today's demonstration represented the largest gathering of bare-breasted forest defenders ever assembled to date. More rallies are anticipated.

The "Hole in the Headwaters" was left out of the $480 million deal cut by Senator Diane Feinstein and Charles Hurwitz of MAXXAM, even though the 705-acre stand of 75-year-old second growth and residual old growth redwood and Douglas fir is actually within the boundaries of the Headwaters Forest Preserve and constitutes future endangered marbled murrelet habitat. The South Fork of the Elk River, the watershed in which the "Hole" falls, is one of the largest and last of California's endangered Coho Salmon bearing
waterways. Activists contend the omission of this beautiful redwood stand from the Headwaters deal constitutes government ineptness at its worst.

Most activists expected the "Hole in the Headwaters" to have been protected. Even after the area was left out of the original deal, $80 million was left over to purchase additional redwoods to add to the
preserve. MAXXAM turned down a possible $13 million allowing it to return to the California general fund, declaring the land not for sale. Lawsuits filed by various environmental protection organizations failed to achieve restraining orders. After three years of effort, the only thing standing in the way of the falling of this majestic grove of redwoods and Douglas fir is the bare-breasted brigade and a hard-core crew of Earth First! activists and forest defenders.

These women are being exploited! They are being reduced to mere sex objects! This is disgusting! Women are more than just a pair of breasts! How dare you teach young girls everywhere that the only way they can participate in a male-dominated world is by flaunting their bodies! This is degrading and insulting to women everywhere!

Earth First has become a sexist organization teaching that a woman's most valuable and powerful asset is her sex appeal to men!

---

Of course I'm not sincere. I just find it amusing that this sort of feminist tirade, very similar to the usual sort of Women's Lib hysterics, are conveniently silent in THIS case.

As usual, dissent from *within* is supressed for fear of revealing their true lack of unity.

Way to go Spider Jerusalem! Well done! You've hit the nail right on the head! Now EF and its fearless leader Darryl have taken to exploiting women. Darryl, your thoughts and reactions please. You now stand accused of being a sexist, Bobby Riggs wannabe.
by Spider Jerusalem
Mental midget. Did I not just clearly state that the accusation was a parody? The real accusation is against the Women's Liberation faction who would normally be tearing their (or my) hair out over such an idea.

Imagine if I'd come on here and said "Hey ladies, I've got a great idea! Why don't you just go topless and strut your stuff in front of those male loggers! You know, give them a pleasant eyeful to distract them from their anti-environmental duties and hamper the logging process."

OH, how I would have been flamed. Misogynist, chauvanist, exploiter.. I would have been buzz-worded to death for such a suggestion.

Yet here we see it successfully executed in all its bare-chested glory, and the feminists aren't chiming in.

As usual, I end with one word: hypocrites!

The main question should be is this effective? While it may gather some media attention-- is this good attention? or does it just reinforce the idea that tree-huggers are nutcases? If i asked my grandma no doubt it would be the latter.
by humm
these woman exploited their sensuality and it halted logging for two hours, no one ended up in the pokey and it was a womyn's affinity group that decided to do this. men played support roles from what i heard. Even thug Carl Anderson got a kick out of this one. Carl's PL's thug top dog security guard who hasn't smiled around a protest in the fifteen years this has gone on, well maybe except when he put Gypsy's body in a body bag. Rumors have it the thugs were smiling then. So this protest did lighten up the mood and brought about some creative dialogue. Go womyn!

spider jerusulem

what is sexist about 9 womyn invoking the goddess to stand up against the rape of our mother? a womyn's affinity group deciding to do this is a powerful act of love through goddess energy.

this is something totally different than if some dudes had told my sisters, "hey ladies, why don't you just go topless and strut your stuff...give those loggers a pleasant view..."

this isn't about "strutting our stuff" or a "pleasant view" fool. maybe the confusion you feel is resulting from the fact that you can't see the difference....

What's up with 'womyn'? I've been under a rock - is this the new spelling?

1. la Tigresa is not part of Earth First! Darrly is mearly helping doing some Promo, a mistake in my eyes
2. This is al all women lead action
3. Darryl Cherney has nothing to do with this action, hes just the messenger
4.La Tigresa and many other women have been doing this kind of actions for over a year, check out our site http://www.earthfilms.org/campaigns/strip_pages/strip_index.html
4. this is La Tigresa words
LA TIGRESA'S WOMANIFESTO
or WHY I GO BARE BREASTED INTO THE FOREST

by La Tigresa
Traditional means of protest are no longer enough.
Nearly 99% of California's old growth redwood forests have been cut down.
Coho salmon are almost extinct. And still the rape of Mother Nature continues.
I go bare breasted into the forest to embody Mother Earth, pleading to be protected and preserved.

The chainsaws, bulldozers and logging trucks stop in their tracks when they see me.

I am the Earth Mother begging them to do no more harm to my naked, sacred body.

Mother's breast is the first nourishment a baby receives.

Mother Earth gives us all of our nourishment: food, water, air.
Every culture personifies the Earth as the Great Mother.
The Earth has always been seen as a woman's body.

I want the loggers to see in me an image that is vulnerable, sacred, beautiful.

I speak my poetry to them saying, "I am the Earth", so they can begin to see the Earth as also vulnerable, sacred,
beautiful.

I want them to see me as an image to be protected and cherished, not hurt or damaged.

I want them to see the Earth in that same way.

And they are stopping work to listen to my lengthy poem, "I Am the Goddess".

They are talking to me. They are getting my message. And so is the world.

I get their attention dramatically -- and my common sense request for sustainable forestry then has a chance to be heard.

And heeded. "The most ancient name for God in the Hebrew language is El Shaddai,

It means 'The Mountain-Breasted One' Before you invented God, you remembered Me."

So before you throw stones why not do a little research
How about the actions in Vancover!

you know this is not new!

and she saved a forest last year by doing this, this is her way of stoping the rape of the forest, if you lived up her you would understand how hold a sign isnt going to work, and this has worked for her and some of her freinds

Pola Bear: Your posting is interesting to say the least. At your invitation I went to the Earth Films website. I discovered something rather interesting. Earth Films and the Headwaters Action Video Collective both sell films on the movement. They both have the same mailing address. A request for donations to Earth Films leads to a posting to send money to the Collective. If you go to the Collective's website it says that it is an non-profit affiliate of Environmentally Sound Productions. Environmentally Sound Productions is Darryl Cherney's outfit. So, what conclusions can we draw from this. First, Darryl was ideed doing some "Promo" as you termed it -- trying to boost sales of videos produced by one of his "affiliates". (Leeching!) Second, that makes your assertion that he (and EF) wasn't involved in the planning (I believe your words were he was merely a "mouthpiece") seem pretty hollow. Third, if Darryl was involved, my guess is that La Tigresa is a proud member of EF! too (that's Darryl's kinda crowd.)

Thanks for pointing this all out for us. Now, about that SUV . . .
by forest
I can't think of any thing more non-violent, then a females breast. This form of protest is so nice, because of that. The protesters were friendly, and the loggers couldn't pull any of their violent crap that they are so famous for. I have put my body on the line, and have had it stepped on by Carl Anderson, so I think that any time that there is a non-violent confrontation, then we are humanly doing our best.
by Kiz O'Mek
It was non-violent, largely because men (of which I am one) lose most of their brain functions when confronted with the female breast. They've finally figured out our 'kryptonite'! I certainly hope this doesn't catch on, or we may see the end of the patriarchal system on planet Earth! On second thought, I hope it does catch on... :)
by forest
Ah. nessie, my foot always goes to sleep, so thats where I thought the blood comes from. Still I think that this was a good non-violent protest. Hail to the women who put their breasts on the line! After all it did stop logging!
by river (jewely1love@yahoo)
As a part of that action, I'm proud to say that this was the result of the Goddess Squaddess group. Darryl had nothing to do with the planning and we decided through consensus to do this. As a feminist, I'm proud of my body. I'm not ashamed to stop logging by becoming vulnerable and untouchable. This was a tactic that worked. Get a grip. And who is this chickpea person?
by redwood moss (ancientsoul [at] wildmail.com)
greetings blessed and divine sisters...yessssssss
we will rise with the mother to bring truth to all. Tell the logger to go spend a month in the dessert, and then see how they feel about cutting the divine breath away.
I live in the hawaiian islands, but plan to come this summer and do some cooking and tree sitting. You are loved and support by the great mother. My prayers are forever for the earth and its children (us) who know the truth....the truth will sent you free!!!!!
aloha.... redwood moss :)
by Mysticide
La Tigresa is a mystical zealot. When is EF! going to get away from this quasi-religious tone? Enough is enough, isn't it obvious that hippies aren't going to save shit? Stop with the church jargon and fucking do something you liberals!
by What should we do?
Please tell us what to do. We're too stupid to figure it out on our own. We tried, but it just gave us a headache.
by david b. (nomorefences [at] yahoo.com)
i dont think it should matter wether someone is religious or "hippy" or whatever... im an athiest but i dont "require" all who do direct action or anyone who is an activist to be one straight way...i.e. non-religious,anarchist,vegan,etc etc etc... everyone helps out in their own ways...alot of religious organizations feed the homeless, and alot of labor unions do alot of good (i personally oppose work all toghether)....
and by the way...that topless protest was smart... and since it was an all female action...i dont see any exploitation in it....and it worked didnt it? quit helping out COINTELPRO by making divisions.... were all people... lets put an end to domination and exploitation together... because if we dont do it together... it will just lead to more domination and exploitation
by Stephen (stephen [at] tribaljams.com)
It's time that: 1. exploitation of the environment solely for profit and not for need stops, and 2. that we Americans get over our fear of boobs. Let's do things smartly instead of the typical American method of putting our heads down and just ramming into the environment like mad bulls. Come on, people!, there is just not enough to go on at this pace. Why does the gov't think there are so many monkey-wrenchers out there? Viva Edward Abbey! Viva the Mother!
by Kim
Yup Spider. that person just dont get it. It was the ladies,as we all can see except those with no eyes, that chose to do what they did and no one forced them to do such, Sheesh and good grief. I also ask what In Goddesses name is wrong with breasts?? Durn powerful weapon in my mind that got the loggers to back off for awhile. I myself believe that any peacefull way we can save the world is worth any flack those with low self esteem issues can posibly dredge up :)
by raising interest
Now this is a clever protest movement -- it's not confrontational and the poor guys, transfixed in a gaze of lust, might actually hear some the message. At the very least, they will certainly remember the protest in a positive light.
