Demonstrate Your Support For Women Prisoners!

by Kevin
Saturday APRIL 27th, 1pm

Demonstration against the health crisis at Central California Women's Facility!

Come show your support for the seriously ill women locked down in the Skilled Nursing Facility, also known as the SNF (pronounced “sniff”). The women prisoners at CCWF-Chowchilla are in their cells 22 hours per day with very little contact with other persons. Advocates for women prisoners have learned of horrible abuses happening to the women in the SNF, often perpetrated by the nursing assistants. We have heard of instances of nursing assistants pushing women down and scrubbing their bodies so hard one woman had bruises all over her breasts and genital area. Women aren’t allowed to approach the staff, even in emergency, and if they do, time is added on to their sentence.

One year ago, hundreds of advocates for women prisoners were outside of CCWF after 9 women died in a 2 month period from medical neglect. Now we are going back to demand an end to the abuse in the SNF and we will keep coming back, year after year, until the medical crisis at CCWF is over!

Our list of demands include:
-End the Lockdown!
-Healthcare Not Prisons!
-Compassionate Release for Dying Women!
-Stop the Physical, Mental and Emotional Abuse of Women Prisoners
-Open the SNF to Outside Investigation!

LET'S RAISE OUR VOICES TOGETHER AT THE PRISON GATES!!!

-Saturday, April 27th, 1pm

WOMEN PRISONER ADVOCATES TO RALLY AT CENTRAL CALIFORNIA WOMEN'S PRISON, APRIL 27, TO DEMAND AN END TO PHYSICAL ABUSE AND NEGLECT IN PRISON INFIRMARY

April 23 - In response to documented reports from women prisoners about the physical abuse and medical neglect of disabled and ill women in the infirmary, prisoner advocates are organizing a demonstration outside the Central California Women's Facility on Saturday, April 27, 1 p.m. in Chowchilla (Road 22 and Avenue 24).

According to protest organizers, since December, Legal Services for Prisoners with Children, Justice Now, and California Prison Focus have been repeatedly contacted by women prisoners housed in CCWF's infirmary, also known as the Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF), who report that seriously ill women prisoners are being abused, ignored and neglected in their care. Additionally, women prisoners report that the SNF is locked down about 22 hours of the day. Women prisoners are confined to their rooms with nothing to do.

Some examples of mistreatment include:

* the physical and sexual abuse of a paralyzed woman prisoner by a nursing assistant
* two women who were grabbed and knocked down by a nurse
* women who have recently been threatened and retaliated against for speaking with state investigators
* general neglect by medical and custodial staff who ignore emergency call buttons, refuse to clean rooms or help disabled women with their daily needs

According to rally organizers, over the past month, the licensing division of the state Department of Health Services has sent investigators into the facility. At least two nursing assistants have been reassigned. More women prisoners are coming forward to file official complaints. This infirmary is the only "licensed" medical facility for women prisoners in the state.

Demands of the demonstration include:
Stop the Lockdown;
Compassionate Release for Dying Prisoners;
Independent Investigation of the Skilled Nursing Facility;
Heath Care Not Physical and Mental Abuse of Sick Prisoners.

Demonstrators will carpool at 9 a.m., April 27 in San Francisco at the Safeway at Church and Market Streets, and in the East Bay at the MacArthur BART station.

On April 27, dozens of protesters gathered at the Central California Women's Facility (CCWF) to demonstrate their outrage at the lack of medical treatment of women prisoners.
