Lots 'o events for the week . . . the website has a discussion and posting section also.
The next big meeting for people who want to help organize Bay Area peace events during the week of Sept. 11th is:

Tuesday, August 6, 7 PM
City Blend Cafe, 3087 16th St.
(btwn. Mission and Valencia), SF

Since our last meeting, the East Bay organizing group
has met several times, the artists group met, and some
new events and ideas have come together. Here's a
brief update. Also, the website is up at http://www.unitedforpeace.org. Check it out.

the Islamic Cultural Center. Barbara Lee has been
invited to speak.

Merritt, floating lanterns on Lake Merritt

*Possible overarching theme for East Bay events (and
it could be adopted for SF events too): Our Grief is
Not a Cry for War

Cultural Center of Northern California

We tried for Yerba Buena Gardens and Union Square but
couldn't get them. Now we're waiting to hear back
about Civic Center. If that doesn't work out, Justin
Hermann Plaza. Early morning peace prayer/spiritual
service, daytime peace art installations, 5 PM large
spiritual/cultural program. Lead organizers: Global
Exchange and everyone else who wants to help.

-Wed. Sept 11: 7:30 PM Helen Caldicott speaking at
Herbst Theater. I don't know who's sponsoring this
event.

MASS EVENT

One of the things that came out of the last big
meeting was that people wanted a mass event in
addition to the numerous smaller events. Based on
that, we did two things: one is that we're definitely
going to get an outdoor site in SF for a big event.
The other is that GX has been talking with groups that
work on Iraq about a call for national protests and
actions against a U.S. attack on Iraq. Possible dates
are Oct. 7 (day the U.S. started bombing Afghanistan)
or Oct. 6 (which is a Sunday and might be a better day
for a mass action that a Monday).

ARTISTS MEETING

Here's what came out of the artists meeting...
-we're going to put out a call for people to build
community peace altars
-for Sept. 11 in SF, there will be an installation
about peace and hope that will include a origami peae
cranes, astatue of liberty with doves in her hands,
and a piece that incorporates photos of people with
their thoughts on how they envision world peace
-we'll also ask artists and art collectives to come on
Sept. 11 and bring artwork or create it onsite,
hopefully some pieces that the general public can
contribute to

YOUTH
Youth and youth-serving organizations are coming
together to plan details for a Bay Area youth event.
More info on Tuesday. Come to the meeting if you or your group are interested in planning, performing, organizing or attending.
