I-Hotel Bittersweet Celebration

by J. Guevara
Twenty-five years ago, on August 4, 1977, the San Francisco police evicted the elderly Filipino men from their single occupancy rooms at the I-Hotel. Today, marks the 25th anniversary and a new project to build a Manilatown Community Center on the site where the I-Hotel once stood. KPFA broadcast this report on Sunday, August 4, 2002 at 6PM. 04:43 [MP3 file 3.3MB]

I heard the KPFA broadcast and was appalled and outraged to learn that the San Francisco Housing Authority, a federal, taxpayer-funded agency, is working with the Catholic Church on this project. As I understand it, there will be a community center, housing and a Catholic school. We do not need any Catholic schools. Further, it is a violation of the First Amendment mandate of separation of Church and State for our tax dollars to be working with any religious racket.

As to the project, I can understand the affordable housing, but not the rest of it. There are plenty of community centers in the Chinatown area, which is where the old International Hotel was. It may have been "Manila town" at one time, but it is certainly the Chinese community today. I suppose the community center will be the public space of the public housing, which is reasonable. There is never any need for any Catholic school.

I remember the evictions at the I-Hotel well. It was done under the "liberal" administration of that good Democrat Mayor George Moscone, who was put in office via election fraud of the CIA front, the People's Temple. See: http://www.brasscheck.com/jonestown
The eviction of the tenants of the I-Hotel was led by Sheriff Richard Hongisto, another good Democrat. It is long overdue that everyone stop voting for the Democrat-Republicans as they are all anti-workingclass by definition.

I had heard that City College was supposed to have a campus in that area. It is certainly needed and a good idea. Public schools and housing for the workingclass are always a good idea.

It was surprising that the Phillipino community allowed Willie Brown to represent the city at this event since it was he who insisted that the remodeled Union Square keep the Dewey Monument, which celebrates US imperialism in the Philippines. In my opinion, the only thing wrong with the remodeled Union Square is the presence of the Dewey Monument.

The I-Hotel incident was an example of the "whitening" of San Francisco promoted by the real estate industry with its gentrification schemes. The horrors of election fraud Willie Brown and his history of promoting the "whitening" of San Francisco as a real estate attorney can be found at:
