Been to the Oaktown Airport Lately?

by vic
It's like entering a third world country to venture near the place.
The line of cars last night extended all the way out of the airport grounds and was blocking the entrance to one of the hotels.

What's going on down there??

I got close to the terminal but then couldn't get into the line on the side to pick up my passengers and tried to stop in the center, since my friends were standing right there. I pulled up and they ran to the car and had their hands on the car but a cop came running over blowing his whistle and forced them to move away! I had to take another 1/2 hour going around the circle . . .

People were stumbing around in the dirt with their luggage along the side of the parking-lot-esque line of cars to reach their rides or abandon vehicles and run on foot for the terminals trying not to miss their flight.

Three cars had crashed in their rush to get away from the place and we drove past that mess along the side.

Cops were everywhere, either standing and doing nothing, or rushing up to cars and screaming at them to make them move.

It's *really* bizarre and third world - don't fly into that airport if you possibly can avoid it.

I'm planning on sending some emails to the city council, the tribune, etc. Anyone else have any thoughts?

I tend to take the bus and BART to Oakland airport. Standing waiting for the bus in the bus lane, which is separate from the more complex driving/quick drop-off lane (I assume you were in the bus lane) I saw the people stationed to ticket people stopping in that lane. I also saw lots of busses and vans being blocked by cars stopping to drop off people. I think the bus lane would not function if people kept stopping in it with cars. You should probably consider parking in the parking lot and using one of the shuttles take you to the front door. I bet there are a lot of people who would like to drive but aren't, and if any more people drove, no one could get through the driving lanes at all.

my intention was not to try to sneak into the bus/van lane - it was the first time I'd ever picked anyone up at that airport and the signs are not clear at all.

That wasn't the point of the posting - the point is to ask why it's so insane in the first place. Why do we have an airport that takes a hoard of police to cope with and passengers climbing about in the dark and through dirt to get to their rides?

Buses can't get in either, and not because cars are in the way of the buses, but because all the vehicles added together are simply too many to fit there all at once. You'd have to designate a separate bus lane all the way from Hegenberger - and then there'd really be hell.
