OVER 100 000 MARCH IN MONTREAL

by simms (thefirstofthechildren [at] yahoo.ca)
for some reason, i can't publish this on our local site in montreal -- i have a feeling either a denial of service attack is occurring right now against some of the indymedia servers, or they are simply massively overloaded.

in any case, here is some news from the anti-war march in montreal.

wow!
we just got back from the anti-war march & rally, and let me tell you, there was a lot of energy despite the
outrageous temperatures. overall, it was a very diverse event -- many different age groups and political affiliations
were visible.

i'm not going to make any serious crowd count estimates here, but it was clear to everyone that we went over the
attendance numbers from the last such event, on january 18th -- apparently, by the time the front of the march had
reached st-denis street, the tail end had not yet finished leaving dominion square, over 1 km away (this was
announced from one of the loudspeaker trucks). walking down ste-catherine, you could see the crowd winding its way to
the final rally point in the opposite direction, on rené-lévesque.

the march ended peacefully with a short rally in front of the guy-favreau complex. among others, media personalities
luck mervil, margie gillis, and bruce cockburn gave short speeches along with union leaders; the crowd then
dissipated, gradually, while the more tenuous protesters sang and danced in human chains, to the sound of "give peace
a chance".

peace a chance".
