MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Gunmen shot down two Mexican government helicopters on Monday, killing all five people aboard, as they set out to spray illegal opium poppy crops in the southern state of Guerrero on Monday.

The helicopters were downed immediately after taking off to begin spraying crops near the small town of Xitopontla in a mountainous area, Estuardo Bermudez, special prosecutor for drug crimes, told reporters.

Drug agents killed, helicopters shot down in Mexico
MEXICO CITY (AP) - Two helicopters from the Mexico Attorney General's office were shot down Monday in the mountains of western Mexico during an anti-narcotics operation, killing all five crew members on board, Mexican news media reported.
The helicopters - one manned by drug agents and the second by a crew of backup security personnel - had just lifted off to fumigate poppy plants when they were fired upon from the ground by unidentified assailants, newspapers and television stations quoted the Attorney General's office as saying.
