TEEN GETS 26 YEARS FOR SELLING GRASS

by Jason Botchford
Webster Alexander is 19 years old and his life's dreams are already lost. A teenage fervor for marijuana has cost him more than lapses of memory or bronchitis. Alexander's relationship with pot has cost him 26 years, a hit by the drug war in the U.S. designed to stop the use of marijuana. The results have been questionable as the U.S. continues to have one of the highest marijuana consumption rates in the world.
In the buckle of the Bible Belt is Moulton, Alabama, a town not much bigger than a black-eyed pea, lost in America's Deep South. The folks who live here don't normally get much international interest. They like it that way.

But that changed in January when Lawrence County Circuit Judge Philip Reich sentenced Alexander to 26 years in prison after convicting him of selling 28-gram handfuls of marijuana on four different occasions to an undercover cop masquerading as a student.

It was Alexander's first offence and he pleaded guilty. His sentence -- a plea bargain -- can't be appealed, but his lawyer is working to show Alexander has changed his life. A judge can give Alexander probation instead of jail time for some, or even all, of the 26 years.

"That's a long, long time to go," Alexander said. "I am just so sorry for what I've done. I want the court to see that. I am a completely different man than I was then."

Alexander's story first appeared on news wires in January, a non-descript story filed by an Associated Press reporter who lives nearby. But when pro-marijuana activists caught wind of it, Alexander's face was soon plastered on posters, first in Canada and then around the world.

Sympathizers cried foul over what could be one of the harshest sentences ever given to a first-time offender convicted of small-time dealing. Comparative sentencing statistics aren't available in the U.S.

A similar conviction in Canada would likely lead to a conditional sentence or fine. Even people convicted for running multi-million-dollar grow operations rarely see jail time here.

If there is any such thing as a good ol' southern boy -- using the best possible meaning of the phrase -- Alexander is it.

Rugged and weathered with a farm-tough bluntness mixed with tender sweetness, Alexander is all Alabama. He was raised in a dirt-brown trailer on the limb of a horizon-swallowing cattle pasture where he still lives.

He grew up with two brothers, two step-brothers and a sister. One brother is in jail, another in the air force. Now he lives with his parents, sister, niece, nephew, a pit bull named "Redneck," a dachshund with a nose for trouble, cages full of chickens, 10 miniature goats and some cockatiels.

With a C-grade average, football was his future. Entering high school, he was a top player in the county. The trophies he earned line shelves inside a garage his dad turned into a rec room on their property.

Alexander was counting on a college scholarship to pay for an education that, he hoped, would lead to a job as a physical education teacher and basketball coach.

Alexander's conviction means he can't ever earn a scholarship, can never be a teacher and makes him ineligible for a post-secondary loan, according to state law. He can't even vote.

Marijuana was part of the culture Alexander grew up in. His dad has been busted twice, most recently in 1999, and grew plants on the property. Alexander smoked his first joint when he was just nine years old. At 17 he was smoking regularly.

"A lot of the reason I started smoking was my friends because they all did drugs and it just seemed like the thing," Alexander said.

"If I never got started on drugs, none of this would have happened."

Last February, Alexander needed just a couple of credits to get his high school diploma. That's when a 19-year-old transfer student enrolled at Lawrence County High. The second day the "new kid" was in school, he was making plans to buy pot from Alexander who had no idea he was befriending a 26-year-old narc from the Lawrence County Drug Task Force.

On April 9, as the agent set up his fourth buy from Alexander, police swarmed his family's trailer. The gig was up. They arrested Alexander at gunpoint. Alexander's mom, Wanda, called during the raid, when the police were in her home.

"I asked to speak with my son and the man who answered said, 'This is the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department, you can't talk to Webster,' " Wanda said. "All I could think was 'I got to get home. I got to get home to my baby.' "

Wanda said she couldn't believe what she saw when she made it home.

"My house was destroyed and they had taken my baby to jail."

Alexander was charged with four counts of distribution of marijuana, one count of first-degree possession and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia for rolling papers, scales and a pipe.

"When they first got to my house, I was good," Alexander said. "I thought it was going to be how when other people get busted, they go in and soon are released.

"But I found out that wasn't going to happen to me. The cell door slammed. The bars crashed shut in front of me and I realized how serious it was. I was scared to death that I was never going to get out."

His uncle was able to put together the $90,000 needed to bail him out.

The news of Alexander's arrest was actually welcomed by his family. They wanted him off drugs and this was possibly the wake-up call they had been seeking. But when Wanda was told how many years in prison the prosecution was seeking, everything changed.

"If they had busted him and not tried to hang him, I would have shook their hands, but they're trying to hang my son," Wanda said.

"That's what I don't understand. He's just a child."

Enter John Mayes, a lawyer for 26 years, the only one in the county who handles nothing but criminal cases. He is big, conservative and southern. In his small brick office in the middle of Moulton he has a portrait of Ronald Reagan and a life-size painting of southern Civil War Gen. Robert E. Lee. He calls people from the north "Yankees."

Even for a staunch southern conservative, the marijuana laws seem oddly harsh in Alabama. The state does not differentiate between so-called hard drugs, such as heroin and cocaine, and a soft drug like marijuana.

"Alabama does not rehabilitate criminals," Mayes said. "We just punish them. They don't even teach trades in prison."

When Mayes worked out Alexander's plea bargain, his office was bombarded. Powerful marijuana lobby groups swung into action and soon everybody wanted to talk to Mayes: CNN, New York newspapers, media in Holland.

"I could have been a celebrity but I do not want that," Mayes said. "I didn't do any interviews. I'm here to help Webster."

The pro-marijuana lobby group NORML ( National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws ) was the first to make contact. NORML posted Alexander's story on the Internet. Representatives called the Alexanders and promised what seemed like the world. Webster's mom said they promised to launch an appeal and pay for her son's defence.

"We're just a small town country family, we didn't know what to do, we didn't know how to contact these people," Wanda said.

"The marijuana groups promised us so much. They said they would help and they wanted us to fire John."

Local pro-marijuana lobbies wanted Alexander to be a spokesman.

"There is no question in my mind if the marijuana groups were involved, Webster would have no chance at probation and he would be going to jail for every one of those 26 years," Mayes said. "And they'd probably raise money using his name as he was serving those 26 years.

"There were people who were going to say, 'Judge, don't put Webster to prison because the law he was convicted under is stupid and if you weren't so stupid, judge, you would realize these drugs should be legal.' "

The Alexanders never saw a nickel from any marijuana group. They never fired Mayes, who is leading an appeal. Mayes is hopeful Alexander can avoid some of the jail time, convinced it is the best decision he's made.

Alexander now undergoes regular drug tests and has been clean for a year. He got a high school diploma from a private school he enrolled in. He volunteers with young kids, telling them his story, warning them to try and live a good, clean life.

"I just hope I can go to college and live a good life," Alexander said. "I am just hoping I can turn this all around."

Mayes is with him.

"The penitentiary is no place for a young person," Mayes said. "It's like throwing someone in a garbage can."

Why would you agree to a plea bargain that puts you in jail for 26 years??? It sounds like the family is just too dumb (or ignorant) to know better, or they were too dumb (or ignorant) to fire a bad lawyer. Either way, it's a shame that this kid is going to have to spend 26 years in prison for selling a little cannabis.
by Guerrilla y cachexia.
I know the south, I've been to jail in the south, I know how something like this can happen. Bottom line, I agree with the post " stupid stupid stupid", if you are facing 26 years in the joint, with at least 10-20, you better make damn sure you fight it. Take it from me rehab, recovery, education, self-esteem, counseling; these things work. Jail, I just thought about killing people when I was in jail. Guess what, it takes along time for those thoughts to clear out, why do you think so many people make return trips? It's a seriously vicious cycle, I was lucky, I got treatment afterwards.
by Freedom Fighter
This is a horrible thing to do to such a young person. A 19 year old is not a man and don't deserve such a punshment. There are people in alabama who receive less for a violent crime then one as harmless as websters. People need to stand up against the harsh punishment!
by phaedra
Move to Canada, our Prime Minister pledged to decriminalize personal use of maijuana last week, although small amounts of personal stash are fairly tolerated already, the police can hassle you if they choose. The fines or sentences for personal use are small , the sentence for this man is criminal in itself.
by bob
this is just wrong......no 19 yr old should ever have to go through this. He sold a little (26grams) grass to someone who has is on a huge power trip.......if anyone reads this......really think about what is happening to this peacefull young man.......we need the laws changed!!!!!!

Well,so much for sweet sixteen, thats the time for experiences. In todays world all they are interested in is the money,I'm sure if there was more available for this case, he wouldn't be in so much hot water.Damn government, and to think I served my country,I dont think he should have been dealing but if thats what he choose to do make him pay his back taxes for what he's made and be done with it,a year or two of probation some counseling out here its called prop.-36,and let the man go on his way 26 years?Bullshit.

The military draft never really ended. After Reagan started the 'war on drugs' in 1980, over 2 million americans, mostly lower, working-class (as usual) have been drafted by it. Alexander is an example of the kind that agreed to go to work for the fascist feds as a 'recruiter' and a regular ratfink. Now, none of his old friends can trust him, his dad can't even trust him, because his plea-bargain has included the condition that he report anyone he knows who possesses 'illegal drugs', including medicinal marijauna.
If he had let 'NORML' help, he probably would have gotten a better deal. Now, he's just a rat's ass, and he'll kiss the blade along with the other fascist pis on judgement day.
by so this is justice?
How could this sort of thing happen? I mean, do I understand that this was the result of a plea bargain? For what? Murder?

What kind of people would do something like this for an offense of this nature?

Someone please explain. I'm not familiar with the justice system in Alabama, and if this is an indication of what "justice" means, then I'd rather not be familiar with it at all. There's something very wrong here, ethically, morally, and judically.

I'd hope a sentence like this would'nt exist anywhere...but, Jesus, this is Alabama we're talking about. There must have been bud all over his property, why else, would one want to even stay in such a place. I know we can't request where we'd like to be born. He was 19 though he probably had plenty of money from the nug's he sold that he could have used to get out of such a place. Maybe continue the business elsewhere with less harsh laws. Maybe just not sell to cops. All in all, im sure Webster is not totally innocent or that bright, along with the rest of Alabama.

I would rather be with a room full of people smoking pot than a room full of drunks. I have never heard of anyone forgetting what went on the night before after JUST smoking pot. Look what happens with alcohol!! Teen pregnancy, drunk driving, rape, assault etc. etc. etc. The list just goes on. Of all the people I know who smoke pot (lots) I have only known TWO who got mean while smoking, and, well holy shit, they said they just wouldn't smoke it again. Of all the people I know who drink - yeah, you guessed it MOST of them are assholes when drinking. Pot is NOT addictive (no matter what the bleeding heart liberals and anti-cannibis people say)., alcohol IS. Of all the teens I knew in high school - MANY who drank heavily became alcoholics, lost their jobs, lost their families, hit rock bottom, went to jail, got drunk driving charges and generally fucked up their lives. Of those who strictly smoked pot recreationally, well let's see - I know one who is an excellent physician, three who are teachers, one who is very high up in the banking world - the list just goes on. These people should just get their facts straight, and not use statictics, which can be manipulated however you want, to try to sway people against it. Most of the people I know who smoke pot would NEVER do any harder drugs. They know how bad they are and how they can screw up you life. The ones who do move on to other drugs do so because they would have gone on to harder stuff even if they had NEVER smoked a joint in their lives! Let's get the police doing something important. Rather than busting a room full of people relaxing with a soothing hit, go find the stupid people who are vandalizing or assaulting, or stealing - yeah, the REAL crimes. Besides, those people sitting around puffing would never go out and do that bad shit. Contrary to popular belief (by the non- believers) potheads are not criminals. Take a look at the person beside you next time you are out somewhere, chances are they are a pothead, and a viable, meaningful person in society.

CRIMINAL, I THINK NOT, ENTRAPMENT, I THINK SO. A 19 YR OLD MAN FACING 26 YEARS FOR SELLING GRASS TO AN UNDERCOVER NARC. A 26 YR MAN FACING 4-6 YEARS FOR RAPE AND MURDER. LAND OF THE FREE, WHATEVER. THE US GOVERNMENT SHOULD DEFINITELY TAKE A STRONG LOOK AT THE WAY CANADA IS VIEWING THEIR LAWS GOVERNING MARIJUANA. THERE ARE MANY MORE SERIOUS CRIMINAL ACTS THAT NEED TO BE ADDRESSED BESIDES SOMEONE TRYING TO MAKE A LITTLE MONEY SELLING SOME GRASS. FACE IT MARIJUANA ISN'T GOING ANYWHERE. PEOPLE HAVE ALWAYS, AND ALWAYS WILL GROW IT,SELL IT, AND SMOKE IT, NO MATTER WHAT THE GOVERNMENT DOES TO TRY TO CURTAIL USAGE. WE'RE NOT LIVING IN THE STONEAGE ANYMORE PEOPLE. I FEEL SORRY FOR THIS YOUNG MAN WHOSE LIFE HAS BEEN TAKEN BY A GOVERNMENT BEAURACRACY THAT WAS BUILT BY PEOPLE WHO WERE TIRED OF LIVING BY LAWS (IN ENGLAND) THEY FELT WERE UNJUST. THIS SAME BEAURACRACY IS ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR A 250 BILLION DOLLAR DEFICIT. LETS PUT THEM IN JAIL FOR 26 YEARS AND LET THEM THINK ABOUT IT!!!
by J. Smith
This is one of the most rediculous things, if not "THE" most rediculous things I have ever heard of. Marijuana is a "weed", it grows in the ground, naturally in many places. It has been here since the beginning of time. If you plant a seed from the plant, it will grow like a rose, like grass, trees etc. This is not a "Man Made" substance, it is not a chemical. The government tries to control it, because they are envious that anyone can grow it and make money from it. They are a tight knit bunch of grimey bloodsuckers, who want their hands in everyones money. This is definitely not something that they should be able to control, actually I can think of many things they should not be able to control. I am Canadian, and I am soooo glad to be Canadian. Our government needs reforming in some areas, but they are not nearly(large margin)as corrupt as the "American government." This poor kid loses his life because of a "WEED" in his posession. Do you people not understand how utterly moronic that is? Saddam Hussein controlled the Iraqi people by a method of fear (death upon voice of an individual's opinion or belief), America controls by another method of fear (loss of life, in prison). Is there a difference? In a real world a government should work like a student council in school, taking opinions from the people and developing based upon those ideas, not ruling with an iron fist! My sincerest apology to you Webster, that we must live in such a suppressed society, my thoughts are with you. The day that the "PEOPLE" ( you and me ) get together, will be a glorius day. One voice will get you no where, strength is in numbers. "You can only kick a dog so many times in the balls, before it bites you back!"

fuck alabama and fuck their comunist laws, no one deserves 26 years of punishment for spreading some good smoke. We are in pergatory.
by kevin
I will aggree with a lot of you that the sentancing this guy got was ridiculous, I mean if alcohol is legal to its limit, than why can marijuana be. But to people who think "FUCK THE GOVT." I disagree with, because we are the primary govt. the only reason why marijuana is illegal is because society has made it an immoral substance, but alcohol seems to be okay because it has been used by nobleman in the past hundreds and thousands of years. Take for Example: a woman goes to a beach wearing a bikini thong or g-string, and society accepts it and its not a problem, but if she goes to the beach wearing her underwear and bra, then she gets arrested for indescent exposure.

Laws are made by normal society, and a large percentage of society says that it is immoral to smoke weed, or not dress a certain way, so they vote for a law, and it is passed. If society was really into weed, it would be no longer illegal, but only a small percentage will actually aggree with weed believe it or not. Another example is prohibition. Prohibition was passed to make an alcohol embargo, but society thought it was ok and thought it was ethical to drink, and overthrew the law and remade that law. The politicians realized that everybody wanted alcohol. But today people have a hard time voting, they don't seem to understand that if they want something, they have to vote, and I'm not talking about a measly 30 percent, but the whole U.S. voting. If we don't vote, we don't stand out.

The way I see it is that nither weed nor alcohol is very good for you, except when alcohol is in small portions, so if alcohol is legal why isn't marijuana? Well like I said before, alcohol in small portions is good for your heart (a glass of wine), but weed hasn't been proven for health, so the large majority of society has made it unethical for smoking it so that is why people need to stand up and try to convince each other otherwise if they want weed legal.

I don't really care whether its legal or not, but I tell you what, I'd rather see a father stoned, then drunk beating on his wife and kids. I'd rather want to see someone come to work sain instead of being braindead stoned off their asses. So there are ups and downs to each of these substances. But this person should not get this kind of sentancing at all.
I think that it's fucked up that dude is goin to prison/jail for 26 years cause he had 28 grams ( a ounce ) that is just too much if you ask me. I could see if he was selling crack or herion or something, but its just pot, it's not like if I dont have a joint imma go out and steal or kill someone ( I might get a headache it's nothing some asprin can't handle ) to get some weed I mean come on, The Goverment needs to lightin up on the pot laws foreal, this pisses me off so fuckin bad imma go i just want to put what the fuck I think about the stupid shit, goin to jail for 26 years for 28 grams ( a ounce ) of dope!!!!!! I mean come on what the fuck!!!!!!!!
26 years, thats a long ass time just for a simple amount,I mean come people who kill get 10 not even that some may get 5 with probation then back to the streets ta go kill (or be killed)any ways thats just not right.
by J. Smith
Kevin, I accept your opinion, because everyone has the right to their own opinion. However, if you do your research, you would find that marijuana was also used for the past hundreds of thousands of years. I don't know what world you are living in, but laws are envoked and controlled by the government, solely by the government, not the people. The "only" reason, pot is illegal, is because the government can't make money off of it. The profits which are made through trafficking marijuana are non taxable, quite obviously because the government is ignorant as to who does the dealing (let's face it, you're not going to claim marijuana profits as income on your taxes). The people will not speak out on the topic of marijuana because of fear, which I elaborated on in my last posting. Webster gets 26 years for possessing and trafficking marijuana (A WEED), do you know anyone, who wants to spend the rest of their lives in jail for something so petty? Which is why statistically you may be right, but in all actuality the statistics are not correct. Prohibition was terminated because the government realized how much money they were missing out on. Granted there probably are more alcohol users than marijuana users, especially when you are talking, "the prohibition era." But this is slowly changing. As you stated, there are ups and downs to marijuana, as there are with just about anything. However there has been recent documentation released by Researchers at the National Institute of Health, led by A.J. Hampson, which shows that both cannabidol and THC two constiuents found in marijuana could provide protection to the brains cells in the event of a stroke. This is only the beginning because research has only just begun. I am "brain dead stoned" right now, as you call it, and I can still tell ya that, it is spelled "sane" not "sain". Sorry if this posting is off topic, just wanted to clear the air!

First of all I just graduated U.C. Berkley, and I had one good freind who seemed to get straight A's and B's, finally I gave up on the poor bastard because he decided to hang out with a bunch of pot smokers, and turned his 3.7 gpa into about a 2.2 because all he though about was weed. You don't need to get all buthurt about my thought about weed, I don't care who smokes it or not. You said this was a medical fact, this didn't seem like a medical fact to me. Right now I don't know where the guy is, but he is probably living under a bridge for all I know. I tell you what you come up with legitimate proof that THC will protect brain cells and then I will convinced, and im not talking proof from some other opinion, I'm talking top science research, and I bet you if the govt. wanted to harness marijuana he would make a shit load of money. Dealers become millionares by the shit. THC totally destroyed my use to be friend I tried to talk him out of it, but it was like talking to a brick wall. Now I know you have your opinion and I have mine of course, but make no mistake, I hate the feeling of being stoned off of that shit, I tried it once, and I hate the fact of having cotton mouth, being fucking hungry as hell, staring into oblivion at something, and not having controll of my thoughts. Now if you think that that makes you a healthy brain surgion, then more power to you.

Maybe the judge had a personal axe to grind, maybe he was just in a bad mood that day, but .... how on earth is he going to deal with a serious offence, like assault, or even murder .... he ought to get his priorities right.

Not to mention the deterrent effect - long sentences for doing very little are going to encourage hose so inclined to use force to eliminate victims, witnesses etc., since they won't be any worse off for so doing.
by 420
Thanks, kevin. Your little tale about your imaginary "friend" was quite entertaining. Do you have any more tales that you wish to share?
by Alex Bligh (top_ekoms [at] hotmail.com)
Hmm, you seem to have your facts together huh Kevin. Its people like you that cause all the hoo-ha over pot, you sit there spouting off about how it ruined your friend's life, I really doubt that, ten to one he also started drinking a bit more than usual, to hung over to go to class, etc. Show me then I'll belive you definetly isn't the right attitude either, had you actually cared about your "friend" you woulda taken the time to get all the facts rather than just what mommy told you when you were young type stuff. Seriously, your cold attitude and pure ignorance totolly undermine the point you were making. To put it simply, it's the person not the drug, I personally get more drive when i smoke, cleaning actually seems fun. If you want to spend your time talking about how bad it is you gotta come up with something better than, "i dun did that and i didnt like staring at something er kotten mouth and bein hunngry." Ignorance may be blissful but it drives everyone else nuts. Do us a favour admit this 26yrs stuff is garbage and leave, you have no clue what you're talking about. On a similar note you all need to read a bit about the AMBER Alert bill, its the governments gestapo mentality hard at work.
by Erik the Red
Look, some versions of communism (such as China under Mao) upheld strict bans of opium and other harmful substances... but in Alabama, the situation surely isn't to be blamed on "Communist laws." Alabama is reactionary state of backwards conservatives, fueled by a long burning fire of ignorance. That is not to encompass everyone living there, because we see this similar kind of problem everywhere in our country; withered by narrow scopes of acceptable thought and ideological hegemony.

The decision in this case in highly inhumane and dead wrong. Please stop comparing some specific, early-communist ideals, to the actions of the reactionary devil-dogs of capitalism.

Here is the deal -

Pot grows wild. It is not manufactured in a laboratory. Something that is natural cannot be outlawed. What if excessive amounts of bananas were shown to make people hungry, goofy, and happy? Would they outlaw them - since the government can't control who grows bananas in their own yard? Probably. Same thing with marijuana. Big F-ing deal. How is alcohol legal, and pot illegal??? It makes no sense.

If someone doesn't want to smoke pot, that is their prerogative. But those of us who do shouldn't be told that we can't. We are adults! If you want to set an age limit, fine, but don't tell me that I can't smoke something that I plant in my yard. Who the hell are you, Mr. Government, to say what I can/can't do?

Someday, this hypocracy will change.

End the Prohibition!

we tell our kids if you dont do anything wrong then the only thing you have to worry about is bullys. bullys who tell you there twisted way of life then expect you to do it, but everyone knows if you dont believe in something its allmost impossible to follow it. I truly believe that everyone who hasnt had a labotamy has the exact same sense of right and wrong. its called logic. the only problem with this is that people want to twist it to fit there best interests. it shows a weakness that they cant do everything properally, they twist one and then they have to twist a thousand others so that people cant say there wrong . the reason america wont legalize pot is not because they cant make money from it, its a trillion dollar piggy bank and they know that, its becase of the mothers that theve been lieing to for 80 years. and now that america is finally learning that there doing so many things wrong just so that all these other wrong things seem right they cant change it because if they did they would have to admit they were wrong in the past. what america really needs to do but probabally wont, is chop up every system they have and look at them peice by piece, with a garbage can and the real america in front of them. alexander could be a martyr to this as long as hes not forgotten as a criminal.

i know absolutely nothing of pure fact, but i do know that everything i do is controlled by the best of my logic and that it makes life so simple that it doesnt matter if ive been sober for two weeks or just finished an oz. all that matters is my ability to reason without interference from bullys.

thats a pretty fuked up sentence... maybe a fine or some community service, but 26 yrs for a first time offender? yea... the judge musta been doin shots the night before. Whats up with people talkin shit about pot, if you dont like it then dont smoke it you fags, but dont ruin it for the people that do enjoy a hit every so often. Yea, maybe their should be an age limit, but no one is going to abolish pot. It will always be their until it is all smoked up. So fuck you people that bring others down with your anti social problems.

Drug War Incarceration Nation
of arch-drug-warriors
Nixon, Reagan, Bush I, Bush II.
*Evil Drug War Prison Labor Camps! The Majority of the 2.1 million U.S. prisoners are incarcerated due to the Drug War! Drug crimes (24%), drug-related crimes (such as robbing to get money for drugs that are expensive because of the drug war), drug trade crimes, drug-related parole violations, etc.. The USA has 5% of the world's population and 24% (2.1 million) of the world's 8.75 million prisoners. As of the year 2000 the USA again had the world's highest incarceration rate! It is now 5 to 19 times higher than all other Western (long democratic traditions) nations. The U.S. rate is over 3 times higher than it was in 1980 during the first presidential election of far-right arch-drug-warriors Ronald (6) Wilson (6) Reagan (6) and Nancy ("Just Say No") Reagan. The U.S. rate is almost 5 times higher than in 1971 when arch-criminal "law-and-order" President Richard Nixon declared a "war on drugs." 6.5 million U.S. adults, or 3.1% of all U.S. adults, or 1 in 32 adults in the USA, were under correctional supervision (in jail, in prison, on probation, or on parole) at yearend 2000. That is when the true Millennium ended, and when the governor (1994 to 2000) of Texas, and President-select, George W. Bush, the moron Antichrist, left a legacy of a full 1% of all Texans incarcerated! 1.3% of Texas adults are imprisoned today! Bush government waste: It costs around $25,000 per prisoner per year. Texas leads all other U.S. states with 4.8 percent of the Texas adult population under correctional supervision: jail, prison, probation, parole. Statistics, references, links, and charts:
*The majority of the 2.1 million prisoners in the USA are in due to the 666 drug war! See you in Amsterdam.

Here in the heart of southern cali (orangecounty) i see and hear of people getting caught with bud everyday while car jackers, taggers, straight up gangsters and killers get away with their crimes where are you for all of this i thought you were on our side. I guess not, but get this for every 1 person you catch with bud i know of at least 2 to 4 more people buy ounces and replace the one you caught so good luck and I'll see you in Canada.

i feel bad for buddy.and its to bad what happened.that undercover cop should be dragged behind a truck from canada to fuking alabama.
This sentence is straight up the stupidest thing on the face of the earth... 4 Ounces, big deal... The guy isn't involved in any big time crime organizations and many of them are still running around selling a lot worse to kids and doing a lot worse than someone selling 4 ounces of weed... I never used to smoke pot, now I do. Wasn't because of friends, and I can actually stop whenever I want to. There is nothing that bad about weed that should put a 19 year old (same as me) in jail for 26 years. That's his whole damn life for doing something that's done all the time. Jesus christ people can smoke ounce joints, what the hell are you MORONS in the States doing to this kid. Alcohol is legal, you can buy it in variety stores... IT has many more effects than marijuana... People drink and drive all the time and kill other people. Weed doesn't affect driving close to as much, I know... There are a hell of a lot more arguments that could be mentioned, and a hell of a lot more terrible comments that I or anyone could rightfully make to you IDIOTS in the US government. The United States has a lot more problems than drug dealing, and their severity/occurences of other crimes are probably higher and more often than that of Canada... So quit being stupid and giving out a life sentence (25 years is considered a "life sentence") and focus more on the problems that affect your country rather than a couple kids that will soon be sparking up... Beer is legal, and it causes meny more problems than marijuana. I don't know the stats but I would be willing to bet that alcohol has killed many more people than marijuana has... so you guys (US government) should shape up and start using your damn heads... and for another argument that it's a gateway drug and all that b.s... MANY of my friends smoke pot, and JUST pot, they would never touch any other drugs, that also is the persons choice if he/she is stupid enough to dig a little deeper into drugs and experiment. But as for this topic... I probably speak for the majority of people living in north america when I say that the United States government is the most terrible political group on the planet. Start doing a decent job, it's what you're voted in for. And Bush hasn't been doing one. Don't charge the damn kid that's the stupidest thing ever. WAY TO GO USA WOO HOO!

Hmmmm. Isn't this the same country that fairly recently busted a dude for eating a dandelion in Central Park?

America certainly seems to over react to their problems with weed control.

sending someone to jail for marijuana distribution is ridiculous and sending them in for 26 years is fucking unbelievable. did you know it costs up to $20,000 per inmate per year....do the math, that is a lot of fucking tax payers money being used to incarcerate a 19 years old who sold some pot. what harm or danger did he actually cause. im sure he wasn't trying to hurt anyone by selling marijuana. hes just trying to make a couple extra bucks off the side, because the marijuana business pays very good and its so easy since the product sells itself. which is why we need to legalize this herb so people wouldn't have to hustle or deal drugs on the streets. marijuana needs to be legalized because there are over a million users in this country and all of them are peaceful, but prohibition makes it wrong when really it brings people together
by kt
i think that this is a bunch of horse crap. 26 years for pot? there are millions of coke heads and fucking heroine freaks out there killing off more people in one day than it take to kill of the the entire nation that smokes buds in a life time. you know what, fuck the cops and gov't bullshit, just cause the mother fuckers cant tax it doesnt mean shit, to put a kid away for a plant and to let a rapist out in three years, yeah that makes a lot of sense huh? it was made for a reason in this soil, not to be illegal and burned, not to cause chaos and hatred, you want world peace, lite up a fattie and talk, world hunger will then become an issue but not the point. before this gov't decided to imprison almost every citizen, OPEN YOUR FUCKIN EYES! AND LOOK AT THE FACT, ALCOHOL and CIGARETTES are more harmful and adictting that weed ever will be. its a hobby, lets leave it at that and see that most people do it for fun not because then 'need it' but because there is nothing to do. or their strress level is too high and rather this than real drugs. its not even a drug its a herb so the dumbass gov't needs to get their dicks out of eachothers ass' and stop being fuckin hypocrits cause lord knows you probably did it too at one point.
by scooby girl (scoobydoobydoogirl20 [at] yahoo.com)
that is just all messed up!!! the drug "MARIJUANA" is never gonna go away. these fucking cops think by catching someone who sells it is gonna stop it? that is wrong and discrimination, mass murders, kidnappers even rapists only get about 5 years if were lucky,. i know that even from just these priests touching lil boys only get several months why?, i ask myself the same damn thing. cops think that there somebody by getting a drug dealer off the streets are doing good to the community, but what about when they let the assholes go that should be locked up forever go free like the rapists molesters murders its all a bunch of fucked up bull shit

Ingnorance of the law is not an excuse. Period. He went to jail. I have zero sympathy for him.

Frankly, I think the law is ridiculous, but I'm doing something other than whining about it...I'm trying to change it. Those laws SHOULD be changed. We can change them.

The rule of law must apply to all and we must accept it. If we do not like the law, we all have the right to vote to change it. Use your right to vote instead of ranting hysterically online.

Here are a few excerpts of case histories of marijuana-induced sexual assaults and murder sprees.

The sprawled body of a young girl lay crushed on the sidewalk the other day after a plunge from the fifth story of a Chicago apartment house. Everyone called it suicide, but actually it was murder. The killer was a narcotic known to America as marijuana, and to history as hashish. It is a narcotic used in the form of cigarettes, comparatively new to the United States and as dangerous as a coiled rattlesnake.

No one knows, when he places a marijuana cigarette to his lips, whether he will become a joyous reveler in a musical heaven, a mad insensate, a calm philosopher, or a murderer.

There was the young girl, for instance, who leaped to her death. Her story is typical. Some time before, this girl, like others of her age who attend our high schools, had heard the whispering of a secret which has gone the rounds of American youth. It promised a new thrill, the smoking of a type of cigarette which contained a "real kick."

According to the whispers, this cigarette could accomplish wonderful reactions and with no harmful aftereffects. So the adventurous girl and a group of her friends gathered in an apartment, thrilled with the idea of doing "something different" in which there was "no harm." Then a friend produced a few cigarettes of the loosely rolled "homemade" type. They were passed from one to another of the young people, each taking a few puffs.

The results were weird. Some of the party went into paroxysms of laughter; every remark, no matter how silly, seemed excruciatingly funny. Others of mediocre musical ability became almost expert; the piano dinned constantly.

Still others found themselves discussing weighty problems of youth with remarkable clarity. As one youngster expressed it, he "could see through stone walls." The girl danced without fatigue, and the night of unexplainable exhilaration seemed to stretch out as though it were a year long. Time, conscience, or consequences became too trivial for consideration.

Other parties followed, in which inhibitions vanished, conventional barriers departed, all at the command of this strange cigarette with its ropy, resinous odor. Finally there came a gathering at a time when the girl was behind in her studies and greatly worried. With every puff of the smoke the feeling of despondency lessened. Everything was going to be all right - at last. The girl was "floating" now, a term given to marijuana intoxication. Suddenly, in the midst of her laughter and dancing, she thought of her school problems. Instantly they were solved.

Without hesitancy she walked to a window and leaped to her death. Thus can marijuana "solve" one's difficulties.

An entire family was murdered by a youthful addict in Florida. When officers arrived at the home they found the youth staggering about in a human slaughterhouse. With an ax he had killed his father, his mother, two brothers, and a sister. He seemed to be in a daze.

"I've had a terrible dream," he said. "People tried to hack off my arms!" "Who were they?" an officer asked. "I don't know. Maybe one was my uncle. They slashed me with knives and I saw blood dripping from an ax." He had no recollection of having committed the multiple crime.

The officers knew him ordinarily as a sane, rather quiet young man; now he was pitifully crazed. They sought the reason. The boy said he had been in the habit of smoking something which youthful friends called "muggles:" a childish name for marijuana.

During the last year a young male addict was hanged in Baltimore for criminal assault on a ten-year-old girl. His defense was that he was temporarily insane from smoking marijuana.

In Alamosa, Colorado, a degenerate brutally attacked a young girl while under the influence of the drug. In Chicago, two marijuana-smoking boys murdered a policeman.

In at least two dozen other comparatively recent cases of murder or degenerate sex attacks, many of them committed by youths, marijuana proved to be a contributing cause. Perhaps you remember the young desperado in Michigan who, a few months ago, caused a reign of terror by his career of burglaries and holdups, finally to be sent to prison for life after kidnapping a Michigan state policeman, killing him, then handcuffing him to the post of a rural mailbox. This young bandit was a marijuana fiend.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested in California for burglary. Under the influence of marijuana he had stolen a revolver and was on the way to stage a holdup when apprehended.

There are numerous cases on record like that of an Atlanta boy who robbed his father's safe of thousands of dollars in jewelry and cash. Of high-school age, this boy apparently had been headed for an honest, successful career. Gradually, however, his father noticed a change in him.

by Californian
We tried that here in California. The feds overruled it. All those conservatives who are always whining about "big government" and "local control" sat on their hands and did nothing. They're hypocrites.
by Yadda....
Try making those "conservatives" put their money where their mouth is by electing them to the congress and senate instead of the same slack-asses who run in the democratic party.

Hell, put a liberatarian in!! They are ADAMANTLY opposed to drug laws.
by Earl Albert Rowell
"We now know that marihuana --

1. Destroys will power, making a jellyfish of the user. He cannot say no.

2. Eliminates the line between right and wrong, and substitues one's own warped desires or the base suggestions of others as the standard of right.

3. Above all, causes crime; fills the victim with an irrepressible urge to violence.

4. Incites to revolting immoralities, including rape and murder.

5. Causes many accidents, both industrial and automobile.

6. Ruins careers forever.

7. Causes insanity as its specialty.

8. Either in self-defense or as a means of revenue, users make smokers of others, thus perpetuating the evil."
by Earle Albert Rowell & Robert Rowell
FIRST STAGE: Characteristic euphoria, or feeling of unnatural well-being and lightheadedness.

SECOND STAGE: Intellectual excitation, dissociation of ideas, and exaggeration of emotions.

THIRD STAGE: Illusion in regard to time and space.

FOURTH STAGE: Intense auditory sensibility, where ever musical sound is distorted.

FIFTH STAGE: Fixation of ideas, which are derived by the suggestibility of near-by stimuli.

SIXTH STAGE: Overbalancing emotional disturbances.

SEVENTH STAGE: Culmination of the sixth stage, where the overexcited and distraught subject may commit violent irresponsible acts due to irresistible impulses of suggestive origin.

EIGHTH STAGE: Hallucination, varied and often terrifying.

" . . . During these [early] stages the will power, the inhibitions, and the restraints have been destroyed. One in this state may, at a moment's notice, become dangerous; for there is no censor in his consciousness to help him accept the good and reject the bad suggestions and stimuli. The criterion of right and wrong he had been taught from childhood up has been lost during intoxication.

The later stages, commencing with the fifth phase and becoming progressively worse until the eighth, produce the anti-social tendencies. Acute mania often occurs, wherein the subject will leave in his wake revolting crimes."

okay.... I dont want to waste the time to reply to both of those huge anti-pot comments that were put in here that list a bunch of negative effects that marijuana apparently has... So let's just get a couple of those facts straight FROM A MARIJUANA SMOKER (me). 1. Marijuana - Above all, causes crime; fills the victim with an irrepressible urge to violence. BULL SHIT! I smoke it, and I don't feel like causing any harm to anyone or committ any kind of offense... Pot smokers are more peaceful and cheery I would have to say. ... Also... you say that it ruins careers forever... I know of a few people... I will mention one... who was into many more drugs than just marijuana, but not just smokes weed, doesn't do anything hard, and is a VERY successful businessman, and built up a very successful company almost on his own. So that is a load of b.s aswell... all of you anti-pot speakers that bring up negative "facts" (horseshit) about the drug... I wonder sometimes where you get those facts from cuz they look pretty stupid... The only time any of those wrongs come into play are when they have a lack of will power or are already not a safe individual to have in our society to begin with. THOSE are the people that should be sent to jail, NOT the people that smoke pot. If weed did what you say it does to people, then this world would be ruined already... I used to have the same attitude anti drug people had before I started smoking pot... but now... all I have to say is get your heads out of your asses... This charge is idiotic. If there really is a god and if the government isn't filled COMPLETELY with a bunch of mindless power tripping rejects then buddy should get absolutely no jail time, and be out walking. Canada realizes that it's a waste to try and charge everyone with pot, and that it's not as bad of a drug as people portray it to be, which is why they're being smart about it and decriminalizing it. They're not going around and throwing people in jail for any number of years just for selling a bit of an HERB that is less harmless than some products we are able to get legally... get with the times...

I cant believe that there was the possiblity of him getting 26 years that seems very unreasonable ecspecially for a minor. sure what he's done should'nt be tolerated but it was his first offense and these are what you could say minor offense's compared to many other things. For example i've known or heard of people who have been caught with possesion of crystal meth and cocaine and with intent to distribute ut have recieved less of a punishment it just seems that the system seems to be a little unbalanced and in my opinion his charges were much to savere for his offense.
Heh Mr.Rowell,
I am uotraged wiht [dislexia caused by evil consumption] you're lack of commonsense. You, along with you're co-author {father, brother, lover},demonstrate a complete and total ignorance of reality ! If I had the will power ,I would hunt you down, murder you and you're co-auther, rape all of you're honey. But of-course I would inadvertantly cause an accident on the way, running into an industrial strenght user.I particularly liked you're 4th. stage referring to auditory disfunction ......I play the trombone, in front of lots of people and usually under the influence(ie.stoned). If ... "marihuana" had an inherent sonic effect.(ie.distortion,pitch fluctuation, insanity) .I surely would be unable to perform under these circumstances .YES?
It's people like you, that give the rest of us a reason to say "Can you believe that !".

"BILLION DOLLAR CROP"
- Popular Mechanics Magazine, February 1938

New Billion-Dollar Crop

American farmers are promised new cash crop with an annual value of several hundred million dollars, all because a machine has been invented which solves a problem more than 6,000 years old. It is hemp, a crop that will not compete with other American products. Instead, it will displace imports of raw material and manufactured products produced by underpaid coolie and peasant labor and it will provide thousands of jobs for American workers throughout the land. The machine which makes this possible is designed for removing the fiber-bearing cortex from the rest of the stalk, making hemp fiber available for use without a prohibitive amount of human labor. Hemp is the standard fiber of the world. It has great tensile strength and durability. It is used to produce more than 5,000 textile products, ranging from rope to fine laces, and the woody "hurds" remaining after the fiber has been removed contains more than seventy-seven per cent cellulose, and can be used to produce more than 25,000 produces, ranging from dynamite to Cellophane.
[...]
It is generally believed that all linen is produced from flax. Actually, the majority comes from hemp - authorities estimate that more than half of our imported linen fabrics are manufactured from hemp fiber.
[...]
The paper industry offers even greater possibilities. As an industry it amounts to over $1,000,000,000 a year, and of that eighty per cent is imported. But hemp will produce every grade of paper, and GOVERNMENT FIGURES estimate that 10,000 acres devoted to hemp will produce as much paper as 40,000 acres of average pulp land.

wow this is all so intersting but true at the same time. these children should not 26 years in JAIL/prison for dealing drugs that is kind of stupid.
by acamogirl
The only logical explaination for this judge to do such bullshit, is to make an example out of this kid. It seems he is trying to make a name for himself, and his apparent 0 tollerance. I'd bet money on the fact that the judge himself smoked in the past and is somehow trying to clean out his closet and force his prior transgressions onto others. Either that, or he's just a canabis hater and an all around prick. whose to say, but I hope he reads this, that little life ruining fucker. he ruined this kid's life as bad as crack would have. Fucking prick. I will neither confirm or deny that i smoke weed, but i will tell you that i am a Gulf War Era Disabled Veteran that suffers from pain every day. And i can tell you that the way I help myself is way better for me than taking percocets, Vicodin, oxy's, morphine, or fentynol patches that I could be on. Fuck that shit. I have 2 kids that need me more than just a shell of a mother. It's not only good for pain, it's also good for people with tempers, anger management issues. You give an asshole a joint to smoke, and he may still be an asshole, but the chick, or dude, won't get the shit beat out of him/her. I have served this Country, and i vote in every election, which i feel gives me the right to say that judge is a power hungry asshole, who needs to roll one, smoke it, and then he'll turn the kid loose. Now i don't condone selling. If you want some, grow it for yourself, or share with family or close friends that you've known for a long time. The selling is where you always get screwed. I feel bad for the kid, he got screwed. And now all that happened to the man (judge) that virtually took this kid's life away, is that now everyone will know his name. He made his mark. Can't he just go piss on a bush like other dogs do, instead of pissing someones life away.
by country girl from lawrence county
Just wanted ya'll to know the judge finally retired this year because his wife had cancer she died about a month after. She was a alcoholic in other words a drunk- drinked all the time, I guess he thought he could save someone from being like her!! But I know this to be a fact if you were friends of his he would help you out, I had a family member that has had 10 DUI's he did not send him off to prison until this last one and thats because he hit a woman and nearly killed her. He was actually in jail because he just had a dui and got a year he was serving it in Lawrence County but they let him out every day on work release!!!!!! They were told he was drinking and driving and they did nothing when he had the wreck he was 5 times the limit ( on moon shine). So the judge knew if this got out how many dui's he had prior this woman would own Lawrence county and cost him his job!!!! He sent him off the next day.

When he got sentenced he took a plea he got 10 years for DUI and 10 Years for assault because the woman was hurt. But they let them serve it together so really just 10 years he spent 3 years and 6 months and just got out last october. He got off probation this february , during his monthly trips to his parole officer she never drug tested him or checked for alcohol and he was drinking everytime he went hes staying drunk everyday!!!!!!!

And just had another family member who september 28 went to his step moms and shot her in the head because he wanted some of the money his dad left to her when he killed his self. He was gonna get his share when the house sold but she could live in it till she died then it had to sell. Do you know his bail wasn't but 75,000 dollars which is 7,500 to bond out for attempted murder. So how in the hell can they give a kid 26 years for weed!!!!!!!!!!!! Its all in who you know!!!!!!
