Film Showing for Disappeared Women in Juarez, Mexico

by Meredith Walters (waltersmeredith [at] hotmail.com)
The Black wHole Collective will be showing Senorita Extraviada, a film by Lourdes Portillo about the disappearance and murder of hundreds of women in Juarez, Mexico over the last 10 years. The film showing will be in Fruitvale in Oakland and include a discussion and letter-writing session.
Between 200 and 800 women have been disappeared or murdered in the last 10 years in the city of Juarez, Mexico. Though the numbers are hard to know for sure, two things are certain:
1. The marked increase in violence against women began at around the same time that NAFTA became effective in Mexico. Many of the women murdered have been poor women working in the maquiladoras of this border region.
2. The violence is still unresolved, despite investigations, local organizing efforts, and Amnesty International reports. Investigations by local authorities have done little or nothing to discover the truth.

As part of their effort to educate the public and establish ties with local groups organizing in Juarez to stop the violence against women there, the Black wHole Collective is showing a film, Senorita Extraviada, by Lourdes Portillo, about the murders and possible cover ups. The showing will be on Thursday, July 24 at 6:00pm at the World Cup Cafe in Fruitvale in Oakland, at 1212 Fruitvale Ave. (near Fruitvale BART). Discussion and letter-writing will follow the showing, and homemade tamales will be available. This event is FREE.
