Rally Tuesday to Stop Anti-Black Undemocratic Police Sweeps in Oakland!

by Wendy (uhurureparations [at] yahoo.com)
Calling for an End to Stop the
Police Sweeps of the Oakland African Community Being Coordinated with the County and State of California!
On Tuesday, September 23rd at 4pm at the Oakland Police Department Headquarters at 7th and Broadway, the International People’s Democratic Uhuru Movement and the African People’s Solidarity Committee will hold a press conference and rally to speak out against the undemocratic sweeps of Oakland’s African community being coordinated at the city, county and state levels.

The Oakland Police Department have received assistance from Alameda County Sheriffs and the California Highway Patrol to conduct “sweeps” through the African community of East Oakland.
While this coordinated effort is said to be taking place to “stem the violence,” these sweeps are in reality part of the anti-democratic and vicious policy of police containment of the African community that takes place in lieu of economic development.

Statistics show that 72 percent of all illicit drug users are white and yet almost 60 percent of those in state prisons on drug-related charges are black. However, white communities don’t experience sweeps of people standing on corners and criminalization by the media and police. In Oakland, the city of the infamous “Oakland Riders” who currently on trial for their crimes against the black community, we can not tolerate this kind of aggravated attack on our community.

The International People’s Democratic Uhuru Movement and the African People’s Solidarity Committee denounce these undemocratic and terroristic police attacks on the African community and believe that the only solution to the violence in Oakland is social justice, economic development and reparations for the historic and present crimes against African people.
