The Education not Incarceration Coalition (http://www.may8.org) is kicking off the 2003-2004
school year with EDUCATION NOT INCARCERATION TEACH INS in schools statewide, building toward a STATEWIDE DAY OF ACTION to demand funding for our schools not more prisons which will tentatively occur on Wednesday, November 12, 2003 (dates for the teach-ins and statewide day of action will be confirmed at next Monday’s Education not Incarceration meeting, 7PM at 6501 Telegraph Ave).
The Teach Ins will spotlight the immense problems facing our schools due to drastic budget cuts, while at the same time our state spends more and more money imprisoning our youth and parents.
The teach-ins will include both curriculum for teachers of all ages and presentation from community leaders and will launch Thursday, October 30th (tentatively), National Take Affirmative Action Day, with a press conference, and run up to November 12 (tentatively), the Statewide Day of Action.
On the Statewide Day of Action, teachers, students, parents and community members will bring the tools from the Teach-In to meetings with their state representatives to demand a reduction in the state’s prison population, saving the state money that can be restored to education in the coming budget cycle.
