Save Medicine Lake
Medicine Lake is being threatened by geothermal development. Many NorCal Tribes regard Medicine Lake as sacred for spiritual healing waters. Calpines drilling for geothermal energy would bring toxins such as hydrogen sulfide to the surface in large amounts. This would destroy the balance of Medicine Lake..
Medicine Lake is a sacred place for many of Northern California’s native tribes. The Pit River, Karuk, Modoc, Wintu and Shasta among others have all visited Medicine Lake for healing and spiritual purposes. Medicine Lake is located east of Mt. Shasta and north of Mt. Lassen. It is the caldera of the Medicine Lake volcano and contains unique unknown chemical properties that give the waters healing potential.
Unfortunately, these healing qualities of Medicine Lake could be lost forever if Calpine corporation (Halliburton connection?, definitely Gray :show me the money: Davis) proceeds with geothermal development in the Medicine Lake area. Calpine will attempt to drill deep underground and harness thermal energy and steam trapped below ground. This geothermal development will pollute Medicine Lake. According to Floyd Buckskin of the Medicine Lake Highlands Defense Coalition, Calpine is "putrefying the water the Creator made for us to be healed in.”’

When drilling disturbs the underground thermal energy, trapped gasses are brought to the surface via steam plumes. Hydrogen sulfide, arsenic and chromium are among the metals and compounds that will emerge in steam plumes at about 360 tons per year. These will enter Medicine Lake and alter the chemistry of the lake, risking loss and discovery of the lake’s healing qualities. Hydrogen sulfide is especially a risk because it will also be in vapor form, allowing it to travel further and enter nearby pristine streams, causing more fish kills. We need to prevent Calpine from destroying Medicine Lake.

Medicine Lake campout planned for Oct 18-19
Please come visit Medicine Lake and enjoy the beauty of this sacred water. Help protect this important lake from the geothermal drills of Calpine.
