Yusef Bey Dead at 67

by Rick DelVecchio (rdelvecchio [at] sfchronicle.com)
Black Muslim leader Bey dies; battled cancer
Remembered for opening doors to down-and-out

Rick DelVecchio, Chronicle Staff Writer
Thursday, October 2, 2003

Yusuf Bey, the Oakland Black Muslim leader who had been fighting cancer, died late Tuesday at an area hospital. He was 67.

The founder and chief executive of Your Black Muslim Bakery had undergone surgery Monday night to relieve an obstruction in his colon caused by the cancer spreading in his lower body, his attorney, Lorna Brown, said.

"It's actually quite shocking to everybody," Brown said. "I did see him a week and half ago at the bakery and he was actually in the bakery with an apron on. He lost a lot of weight but he looked OK."

In May, a doctor testified that Bey had inoperable cancer and had a life expectancy of less than a year. The disease began in his prostate and spread to his colon before it was discovered.

Family members and Bey's business associates and family members had no immediate comment.

Bey was among the best-known Black Muslim figures in the Bay Area. His supporters credited him with creating an organization that promoted the well- being of struggling African American families.

They respected him as a religious leader who opened his doors to the down- and-out and invited them into the business, faith and kinship network he called the "Bey family."

Bey "worked with people who didn't have a direction, bringing them in and cleaning them up," said Chuck Johnson, founder and chief operating officer of Oakland's Soulbeat Television Network, which has carried Bey's "True Solutions" program for 25 years.

". . . The only thing I can say is, he did a good job in our community and it's going to be a loss."

Known as Dr. Bey, he was a patriarchal figure within the family. Since June 2001, he had been fighting accusations that he abused his authority in connection with several girls who worked at the bakery.

He had faced sex abuse charges in Alameda County stemming from his relationship with a woman who was 13 when she came in contact with him while working at the bakery. Prosecutors also had alleged that Bey raped three other young girls under his spiritual wing from 1976 to 1995, although those accusations were dropped after the U.S. Supreme Court in June overturned a California law allowing the prosecution of decades-old sex-abuse cases.

Bey's brush with the law began 16 months ago, when a 33-year-old woman walked into Oakland police headquarters to say that Bey began abusing her in 1976 and fathered three of her children. The abuse continued from the time she was 8 "until she was able to get away from him, when she was 18," according to a police report.

Three other women later came forward with similar charges. The subject of the criminal case that was active at the time of Bey's death said she first saw Bey on TV in 1994 and felt he wanted to help young people in trouble. She got a job at the bakery and was abused and threatened by him within a week, she said in the police report.

Brown said Bey's death "certainly means the criminal case is over." Bey also faced civil claims filed by three of the unnamed women who worked in his bakery.

J.H. Stephens of Greenville, Texas, discovered the teachings of Nation of Islam founder Elijah Muhammad and became Yusuf Bey at age 30. He switched to a health-food diet and moved to California, one in a stream of Southern blacks headed to the West Coast.

Following his father into the bakery business, he opened a chain of bakery outlets in the Oakland area. He also formed a security business and a Muslim school and produced a weekly TV program. In 1994, he ran for mayor of Oakland.

Bey continued to work on business projects despite his recent health problems. He had been making progress on one of his long-term goals: creating a corridor for black-owned businesses in the block anchored by his San Pablo Avenue bakery.

"He didn't let his health get in the way of his dream to have that corridor, " said Johnson.

In his teachings, Bey followed the founder of the Black Muslim movement throughout his career.

"I practice Islam as taught by Elijah Muhammad," Bey said in an interview in February. "His religion is a way of life. He has taught how to resurrect us from the dead state -- the so-called American Negro men. We're white people with black skin. It's all a mentality."

Elijah's program of self-improvement is twinned with another idea: self- defense against a common foe, sometimes called the slave-master, or white devil in Black Muslim parlance.

He listed 12 steps that blacks should follow to end their reliance on whites, including: "Make your neighborhood a decent place to live" . . . "build an economic system around yourself" . . . "protect your women."

Bey referred to his health problems in a video taken last May and cataloged on his bakery's Web site.

"This is a very stressful thing," he said. "However, it's a temporary thing. "

He urged the audience to pray for his recovery and unite behind his cause: "We're all black and we all have the same problems. That's the common denominator. Let's unite and get out of hell."

Vibert L. White's book, "Inside the Nation of Islam," spells out the groups history, beliefs and sad manipulation of its followers and the black communiteis that host them. Locally, for a concise and damning look at Bey and his associates, the East Bay Express's "Blood and Money" series is required reading, available on their website.

Damn, that guy treated women worse than Arnold does.

Yussef Bey was a disgusting abuser of women -- of little girls, especially.

I hope his vile antics contribute to discrediting his foul, capitalist, woman-hating religious crap among working class African Americans!

that both Bey and Said have died in the same year age 67, and of cancer!

I'm sooo glad he is gone! I wish that he could have suffered in prison the way he made a lot young girls suffer. He molested me as many times as he could get me alone when I was nine years old. He has a sick bastard! I hope he suffered until he took his last breath! I hope he was scared out of his mind! I wish the black community would wake up and acknowledge that he was the devil encarnate and stop praising him! HE WAS SICK! HE WAS THE DEVIL!

is clearly an anti-semite,, a typical coward who kicks a man when hes dead, while not daring to show his real face

There is never any happiness in anyones death. For 15 years I was under the leadership of Rabb Muhammad, Yusef Beys brother at Temple 26. The Muslims makes punks out of Black men and slaves out of women. Its a cult. They make you believe that they are doing something for the black community. They are only breaking down the black family. I am glad i got out that situation.

Bey was the lowest form of dirt-bag. He molested and raped young girls under his "spiritual guidance." He and his "family" brutalized those who dared cross their paths, acting very much like the reviled Oakland PD Riders. He was no find of blacks, only himself. Recently, the longtime (black) owner of a cafe/BBQ was brutalized by Bey's thugz after Bey bought the building and demanded he stop serving pork ribs.

If Oakland's politicians and black community leaders couldn't speak out about this monster when he was alive, maybe they will now that he is dead. It might avert further exploitation and hate mongering by the Bey gang .

Here is more information for those interested. There is plenty more.

I think the obituary piece is totally irresponsible. It is positive until a couple of sentences at the end where they mention the child rape (and there weren't just one or two cases - there were many, and he produced over 40 offspring). This perspective is akin to saying that Hitler had his positive side because he was an artist and had good speaking skills.

I heard that he did suffer a lot with the cancer. In court, he was initially always surrounded by a large intimidating looking group of men, but they dwindled over time. He would be suddenly wracked by bowel pain and then would pee on himself - but he wore depends. That is a painful type of cancer.

I first met Dr. Bey in the early 90's, we both share the same surname "Bey" people would always ask me are you kin to Dr. Bey, and I would say yes all "Bey's" are kin to me and he was my brother. The Dr. Bey I met was a loving, kind, upright, independent and fearless man who invited me into his home and showed me love. Dr. Bey uplifted many in his community and provided opportunity for many who had none prior to encoutering Dr. Bey and Islam.

No one is without controversy, I can only say that Allah is God, and Islam is peace, anything other than that is confusion and Allah is not the author of confusion. No deed goes unoticed good or bad, There are those who have heavy hearts now and I pray that you allow Allah to be your refuge, regardless of your situation. For those of you whom benefited from being uplifted by Dr. Bey, remember that and spread the good he gave you to others, if you were wronged by Dr. Bey, hopefully one day you will get to a place where you can forgive him, he is no longer physically with us, he has moved on, and hopefully you will be able to move on and live your life to the fullest, for no man knoweth the hour when it is your time to go. If you can't forgive Dr. Bey, Forgive yourself, seek refuge in your higher power and know that Allah (God) is merciful and forgiving.

For too long Bey and his associates have been given a deference they simply don’t deserve and certainly never earned. While most Tribune articles on him invariably list him as controversial and a community leader, the fact that his views ranged from self-interested to racist, not to mention misogynist or anti-Semitic, are often overlooked, a recent article on his memorial was a notable exception. The DNA evidence and allegations of pedaphilia and child abuse clearly outdistance his suited thugs use of intimidation and violence throughout Oakland to drum up support for him that would otherwise not exist. Moreover, the fruits of his labor are few and the price of his failures many, measured in lives of his followers put on hold via his ‘mentoring,’ and by the tax payers of Oakland itself, who helped fund his personal empire through clever voting, loan and other low level scams. Now that he is gone, a full account of his and his associates doings would do more good for Oakland than just a mere note of his passing and fading into obscurity. Hopefully, the clout that he held in Oakland has died with him and a more open look at his activities will result. To be sure, the ‘Bey family’ does not like this idea. However, before that happens, infighting might cause the ‘family’ to dissolve or power plays in the NOI might shift the focus of activity elsewhere.

It is interesting that the black clergy, of whom I am numbered, have not commented on the interesting nature of Dr. Beys lifestyle and opted to be silent.

Black polygamy is interesting in light of the black church always moralizing about civil right etc. I guess they are silent on Dr. Bey out of fear. How can a leader have several wives and it not be challenged? How many more black polygamists are running around the ghetto claiming divine right in the matter?

Also, Bishop Reems, a woman minister, remained faithful to Dr. Bey even though he is as far is east is from the west in measuring up to the pentecostal holiness tradition she comes from. How can she, a woman, side with a man, DNA evidence bears out fathered children(and how,44). And, if Islam as taught by Elijah Muhammed is so potent, why are there leaders all dying young when Muhammed said if they eat good they'd live forever?

Sounds like Dr. Bey was doing more than making bread. Hello somebody!

Several people here refer to the late Yusuf Bey as "Dr. Bey." Please, let's drop this absurd honorific. Some may claim it's just a sign of respect. But it signifies disrespect for those of us who labored hard for years to achieve a doctorate.
There are few LESS deserving of respect and honor than Dirtbag Bey.
by kenneth
what is black polygamy? it seems as though a course in religions of the world is needed here, possibly a course in social anthropology. many religions and cultures worldwide practice polygamy. it is not practice in the united states as widespread as in other parts of the world due to secular laws not religious. many of the black clergy you speak of have enough respect for others religious beliefs not to comment on how others practice their religion. you speak of dr bey and others like him running through the ghetto, with more than one wife as if this has anything to do with the breakdown in the black community. what are your contributions towards improving how black people live? for a member of the "black clergy" you should not be as judgemental as you appear to be. or is it an axe that you have to grind with him? well now is a fine time to confront him with this. your comment about elijah muhammad is beyond any further comment. with the problems in the black community i would think you would have better things to occupy your time with.
by F.U.
Eventhough "Dr." Bey went around raping little black girls (and possibly little black boys) he gets a pass because "he was doing things for the black community". What a load of horseshit!!

Chris Thompson is the only bay area journalist who has had the balls to nail Bey's child molesting ass. No journalists or politicians have spoken out against this Bey's heinous acts.

No matter what you negroes and OTHERS! say about
Bro Bey He worked wonders in the black community

when they could not get employment anywhere else!
because of their criminal record. he provided housing
for our people that was homeless and for all you mis
informed people the call bro. bey a racist! when 2
Caucasian homless men came to the bakery asking
for food he even fed them! bro bey gave us a vechicle
where we could see a tangible example of what black ownership was all you negroes out there pointing fingers what can you offer our people? can you feed them with the best food for human consumption? can you provide housing? what about employment? Hell no! you cant offer a damn thing for us but SLANDER! and gossip! we hate self and kind so it does not surprise me to hear all this foolish bro bey taught brothers how to be providers and maintainers of our wifes and children its because of his teachings that I just recently purchased a franchise and own my
own real estate devolpment corporation to provide low
housing for our people that are being ran off to pittsburg, antioch and tracy because they can afford the rents out here. yes he made some mistakes that
he atoned for but look at his totality look and how many
brothers and sisters he made upright tax paying citizens. if a man can teach me freedom, justice, and
equality what difference does it make how many wifes
he has! I know a lot of preachers with one some none
that have not did half the things bro bey has done for
our people.and for all you COWARDS out there throwing stones at this man please let youself bknown
bro bey has raised an ARMY of soliders "FOI" and that
includes the Nation of Islam under Min. Farrakhan so
If I where you I would be very mindful when speaking about this man if you dont have nothing good to say dont say nothing at all! but if you insist on mud washing bro. bey, AGAIN LET YOURSELF BE KNOWN!

but I WARN YOU BEWARE!

RIP YUSEF ALI BEY

DNA evidence isn't slander or gossip. Its the unrefutable evidence that he was raping young girls.

Is it okay to rape young girls?

by BLACK WOMAN
R.I.P. YUSEF BEY - R.I.P. = ROT IN PISS. THIS MAN PREYED ON THE WEAK. THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CHURCHES AND CLERGY SHOW THEIR LACK OF EMPATHY FOR ALL WOMEN BY PUTTING THIS CRETIN ON A PEDASTAL. HOW INSULTING SINCE WOMEN MAKE UP THE MAJORITY OF ALL BLACK CHURCHES. HE WAS AN ABUSER OF ALL FEMALES. HOPEFULLY, HE SUFFERED HORRENDOUS PAIN UNTIL HE DREW HIS LAST BREATH.
by L.J.
I thought Dr. Bey was an excellent teacher. He was
very knowledgeable and intelligent. I watched him
quite often. I'm not Muslim, but what he taught about
food for human consumption, black ownership, and
educating your children - made sense to me. I often
would go to the bakery and buy tofu burgers. He believed in hard work and the work ethic. He was
one of kind.

I will miss him.

As for his personal life/wives -That was HIS business, not mine. And the allegations - I was shocked I admit, but a man is innoncent until proven guilty. Now that's between him and God or Allah. We all have our downfalls and shortccomings, especially men in power, yet I know that's no excuse. But that's GOD's
business to judge and forgive.

LOOK DB. BEY ( DIRT-BAG ) WAS THE LOWEST OF THE LOW. HE USED GOD AS A SHIELD TO DO HIS DEVILMENT. THOSE OF YOU WHO FOLLOWED HIM SHALL BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES. THINK OF YOUR SISTERS IF YOU HAVE ANY. WOULD YOU WANT A OLD LIMP DICK IN HER BY FORCE. THINK OF YOUR FATHER WOULD YOU WANT HIM BEAT UP BECAUSE HE SOLD PORK RIBS. THINK OF YOUR MOTHER WOULD YOU WANT HER A SLAVE TO A CULT. THAT IS ALL THIS RELIGION IS A CULT.

by fateemah (fateemah [at] sbcglobal.net)
I drive down San Pablo Ave. and see prepubescent girls selling their bodies everyday. And the so called thirteen year old girl he suppossibly raped stabbed another sister out of jealousy behind Dr. Bey. She was free to leave at anytime and did so to go back to the low life from where she came. I worked closely with Dr. Bey for many years and he was dedicated to his community and providing an example of Black ownership. Dr. Bey stoodfast on the horizon of leadership as a beacon of light for the teachings of the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad. For nearly four decades he endured the persecution of the "just us" system, the ungratefulness of those he served, and the love and admiration of a few. Dr. bey has always and will continue even in his departure to afford the righteous a vehicle inwhich to manifest the Messenger's teachings of serving humanity.

I was touched deeply by Bro BEYs broadcast on the Net on Sunday nights and I am shocked to hear of his passing and his problems.

I hope that his organization stays strong and rises up after the aftermath and learns from Bro Bey teachings of the Honarable Elijah Muhammad.

Mr Muhammad said that the best muslims never come to Mosque. And I am one who never attended a YBMB meeting but his lectures have touch my life in a positive way.

I recently purchased a commerical oven and for the last few months have been moved to start a bakery business. I didnt know where this compultuion was coming from, but now I know it was Bro Bey and what I gained from his lectures.

Bro Bey , if you are reading this, Thank you for your inspiration, your guidance, and the teachings of HEM.

If im sucessful as a baker I will owe all to you and Allah.
