October $10 a month idea for NCEF!/Gypsy Mountain Call to Action!!!!

by Shunka Wakan (shunka_2002 [at] yahoo.com)
Gypsy Mountain Raided Today!!!!
CALL TO ACTION!!!!
Simple fundraiser to support non-violent civil disobedience and direct action campaign to save some of the last threatened Old Growth Redwoods and Douglas Fir forests!!!!
Hey! This past September was a very intense month...the September 13th Rally & Benefit was great, with lots of great words and music from activists and musicians, lots of vegan, organic food, and everyone seemed to have a really great time. The Action Camp started the very next day, with a whole truck-load of organic veggies, which were donated at the rally.

September 15th marked the end of marbled murrelet nesting season/the beginning of Old Growth Redwood logging season. On September 16th, Maxxam/PL began logging on Gypsy Mountain! Since there was an action camp at Grizzly Creek State Park Campgrounds, which is immediately adjacent to Gypsy Mountain, a group of activists were able to hike right up the mountain and shut down logging, after PL fell 11 trees. The Maxxam/PL/Columbia Helicopter loggers threatened to come back the next day, with cops, loggers, and extraction climbers.

The next day, September 17th, 2003, was the five-year anniversary of the death of David Nathan "Gypsy" Chain, who was killed when an enraged Maxxam/PL logger intentionally fell trees directly towards a group of non-violent Earth First! activists, on September 17th, 1998. The final tree that the logger fell at us landed on top of our brother, Gypsy, killing him instantly. A proper investigation of this incident was never carried out, since the Humboldt Co. Sheriff's Dept. was deep in the company's pocket in 1998. We now have a new D.A., who is suing Maxxam/PL for $300+ million for fraud...times have changed, somewhat...
All was quiet on Gypsy Mountain on the 17th, and we had a memorial/roadblock to make sure that Maxxam/PL could not log on Gypsy Mountain that day. 11 candles were lit, in memory of the 11 trees that lost their lives the day before. No loggers arrived that day, and we were given a day of relative peace to honor the passing of our brother, Gypsy.

A proposal to save Gypsy Mountain by adding it to Grizzly Creek State park was released to PL, U.S. Congressman Mike Thompson, the Superintendent of the local State Parks system, and several local media outlets, on the 17th.

On the 18th, three activists locked down near the base of the haul road leading up to the top of Gypsy Mountain. Two were locked down to the gate, and one was cemented into the road, just beyond the gate. The Humboldt Co. Sheriff's Dept. cut through the gate, and then removed the lock-downer from his Sleeping Dragon(cemented-in lockdown device), and took him to jail. The other two activists were cited and released.

While the lockdown was taking place, Maxxam/PL/Columbia Helicopters was dropping off loggers, via helicopter, on top of Gypsy Mountain. Activists again hiked up to the active logging site, and attemted to halt the logging operation. This time, however, the fallers did not stop logging, and two security guards were trying to create a buffer between the falling trees and the activists. The security guards identified themselves as "Clearcut" and "Sparpole," although the activists thought that they heard him identify himself as "Sparklepole." All of a sudden, a tree came crashing through the woods, knocking Sparpole's hardhat from his head, and sending Sparpole tumbling to the ground. Some activists said that they had never seen a tree fall so close, and could actually describe the branches crashing into the ground...this is WAY TOO CLOSE!

Maxxam/PL/Columbia Helicopters should be OBLIGATED to form a POLICY regarding PROTOCOL IN DEALING WITH PROTESTS IN THE WOODS. The policy MUST REQUIRE fallers to TURN OFF THEIR SAWS when there are people in the working area. This was supposed to have been established as a result of the out-of-court settlement from the wrongful death civil suit, regarding the killing of David Nathan "Gypsy" Chain.

Luckily, no one was injured or killed that day. Logging operations were halted for about an hour that day, and then resumed for the remainder of the afternoon. Maxxam/PL/Columbia Helicopters haven't been back since, and our Action Camp is still going, so come to Humboldt County, CA, if you can!

During the final days of September, a copy of the Grizzly Creek/Gypsy Mountain Expansion Proposal was hand-delivered to Governor Gray Davis's office in Sacramento, for a special meeting with the Wilderness Resource Committee, to discuss expanding Grizzly Creek State Park(!!) A group of activists also locked themselves to a car in front of the law offices of Mitchell, Brisso, Delaney and Vrieze, in Eureka, CA, to protest the obvious conflict of interests that the lawyers have by representing both the County and Pacific Lumber. This is the same law firm that tried to help PL get away with murder in the Gypsy case, is defending the Humboldt County Sheriff's Dept.'s use of pepper spray torture on non-violent activists, and represents PL on the SLAPP suits. Should Humboldt County have the same interests as Maxxam/PL/Charles Hurwitz? NO!!!!

This lawfirm is intentionally dragging these cases out, denying reasonable settlement offers, and milking both the taxpayers' money(Humboldt Co. Sheriff's Dept. suits) and PL, making tons of money by drawing out the conflicts and pushing for really bad policies, such as the use of pepper spray torture.

That's the update for now! Our action camp, tree-villages, and overall campaign continue to grow, and we could really use your help this month.
If 100 or more people could send us just $10, our costs would be covered, and we could focus more on action than fundraising. Very simple, very low-impact, and very effective.

The ELF rides again

In what officials are calling an act of Domestic Terrorism, the Earth Liberation Front has destroyed a 200 unit apartment complex in a formerly picturesque canyon in San Diego.

The ELF has issued no official claim of responsibility although a banner at the site reading "if you build it, we will burn it" was found with ELF markings.

Calling ELF's latest direct action an instance of terrorism appears to be little more than a preliminary step at painting all environmental/anti-capititalist activists as terrorists. The only connections to terrorists seem to be coincidental at best. Like many terrorist organizations, the group does organize in cells, probably because they are much harder for the authorities to infiltrate. At latest count, this attack the ELF death toll

as to this date no one from earth first has given its member any type of explanation of where the organizations funds are spent or what they are used for. in the past few months this question has been raised many times by many people and the "Shadowy Leadership" of this group has sought to distract, divert and redirect any question of financial impropriety in the
corporation. this much effort in deception has lead to further suspicions of
inappropriate uses of funds.

now with the recent eco-terrorist firebombing and some of the radical statements of some of the E/F membership you may wish to ask some additional questions about the direction this group is currently taking.
by Same old B.S.
People should also ask themselves. where is Rod Coronado at? Is he trying to tie the two groups together? One minute you see him, then the next you don't and fire bombings start in.Hmmmmm.....is there a connection here? The first fire bombing started just after old Rod dropped out of sight in Arcata at a construction warehouse in the bay area. Same M.O. as the one in San Diego.

Damn, Shunka, maybe you caught me on a bad day but I can't summons the energy to responed to your (at least 3) lies/bulls**t. Anyways, you got the CD plug, the "I was there" plug and the " Hey we have better uses for your money than you " plug in. Glad to see your sticking with the formula. See you next month.

I see these attacks on shunka and his music venture, and I think they are entertaining, but a bit overboard. Now, I see this new post, and I gotta say, "damn, maybe there's some truth to these accusations." This is some strange shit. What's up with the money groping?
by conserned
So now you are advocating firebombing the avarage joe who is just trying to make a living and raise a family ? I thought you sorry bastards wanted to save the redwoods, bring down p.l. (0r any other big corp. or gov. enitity). and save the earth. You people need to stop smoking so much dope, you have lost touch with reality. But be warned I WILL defend me and mine.

by In the know
Yawn...

Of course there IS NO financial scandal, and, yes, I
am in a position to know.

From what I have seen, Shunka and the other unpaid
volunteers who are entrusted (by consensus, mind you)
with fundraising duties are doing an excellent job of
both gathering and distributing money for our cause.

Disruptors, be advised -- your desperation is showing!

Now, if you want lots of your money spent on
high-priced accountants (like Arthur Anderson) there
are plenty of "charitable" organizations that can take
your donation, give you a tax deduction and send you a
glossy newsletter with a fancy pie chart purporting to
show EXACTLY where YOUR money went. If that is truly
what is most important to you -- getting a tax
deduction and a supposedly precise accounting of how
your donation is used, then you probably aren't the
kind of person who wants to give money to Earth First!
anyway.

If, on the other hand, your priority is to save our
remaining ancient forests and keep up the pressure on
timber criminals like Charles Hurwitz and MAXXSCAM,
well then you should go right ahead and send your
NO-STRINGS-ATTACHED, non-tax-deductible donations to
North Coast Earth First! where they won't go to
subsidize bureaucracy, but will be well spent
(probably the very next day) on crucial campaign
expenses, including vital safety gear for the brave
souls who are tenaciously clinging to the remaining
old-growth canopy in Freshwater Creek and on Gypsy
Mountain.

"But wait!" -- the disruptors are sure to squeal --
"Without the fancy accountants and shiny brochures and
three-color pie charts, can you actually PROVE that
the money is well spent?"

The answer: Hell no, and we don't intend to start
wasting time on that now, just because of the
corporate timber lackeys and government snoops who are
desperately trying to undercut our support with their
lame-ass accusations!

No, we suggest you look to the pudding for your proof,
so to speak: the fact that forest defense activists
in this region have continued to maintain a
high-profile resistance to Hurwitz and MAXXSCAM for
many years now, rallying thousands of local residents,
students and environmentally concerned folks from
around the state, building and maintaining dozens of
tree-sits and organizing scores of other non-violent
direct actions to protect our endangered forests, and
all that in just the past year alone. Meanwhile,
NCEF! has put out an excellent, informative newsletter
(on non-glossy, recycled newsprint, mind you) and its
all-volunteer Media Collective recently opened a North
Coast Earth First! Media Office in Eureka. None of
this would be possible if the funding was somehow
being misappropriated as our poorly-veiled disruptors
keep shouting over and over again, ad nauseum!

Yep, folks, the proof is in the pudding...so send
along those fresh plums to:

NCEF!
P.O. Box 28
Arcata, CA 95518

On the other hand, if you are a corporate timber
lackey, you can continue to shout "WHERE DID ALL THE
MONEY GO?????" and make bizarre allegations about EF!
buying an office building, real estate, a record
company, engaging in bizarre initiation rituals, etc,
etc, etc...

Yelling "WHERE DID ALL THE MONEY GO?????" doesn't take
much in the way of brains, but, like your intellectual
bedfellow Adolph Hitler once observed, the important
thing is not the subtlety or accuracy of the message,
but simply to "Tell the Big Lie" and repeat it ,
repeat it, repeat it...

So go to it...actually I have a lot of confidence in
the folks reading Indymedia to discern the difference
between the plain old boring truth -- that donations
to NCEF! are put to good use -- and your loudly
exclaimed Big Lies.

All the same, I think I'll stop by to de-bunk (or
should I say de-bunker, Adolph) your attempts at
fascistic propagandizing.

Hey! In the know,
What's the matter, can't you come up with something of your own as far as slander. I thought I seen this post somewhere before. Could "In the know" be @non. It's funny that your post is exactly as that of @non that was posted 9-6-03, PhP#1647288 under the main title of "Sept 15th week of action in the redwoods". Come on, get real.

How come I don't see any thank you's from you morons on the final sale of 700 acres of old growth that went into the park system from PL. I don't see not one smallist comment from any of you. It's not hard to do. Follow my lips. T-H-A-N-K Y-O-U. See, that wasn't hard was it. Hey Shunka!, maybe now you can stop bothering the people on trail #3 there in Arcata. You can go out to the center of this newly acquired section of the park system now do whatever it is you do.

>>So they got a (non) glossy news letter? What trees have they saved? Not much bang for the buck.
by cobb

we sit in 8 trees - earth first

wow
and how much money goes into these eight trees?
and the loggers just cut the rest of the forest in the mean time, or they pay members like jumbo to tell them when the trees are empty (as in the lower village) why should we donate to this kind of group?
by Jeff from B.C (jeffery482 [at] aol.com)
Well I think all this totally false garbage about these nice forest defenders is really sick you loggers or whoever should at least clean up your language.
On a lighter note. The C.D is quite good. I really like the powerful message it conveys. To hear it up hear in the "Great White North" really brought me into the struggle and the frustration, that the families and friends must have felt over all the terrible violence’s being committed upon their children in friends.
We here in Canada try to often find a peaceful way to resolve things. Hearing such beautiful and genuine, music really makes us feel connected to others who share this spirit of compassion and forgiveness. Let us lay down our harsh words, our swords, our un-needed crap.
