MONITORING, FOUNDATION, HOW MUCH IS 3 PERCENT?, THEY DID IT BEFORE - Maxxam/PL
Listen now:
MONITORING
Pacific Lumber is proud of its water quality monitoring program.
So proud that for 5 years, they refused state orders to monitor water quality.
So proud, they're suing the Water Quality Board to prevent access to their monitoring data.
Every indpendent scientist consulted warns that when monitoring doesn't affect rate of cut, it's pointless.
We need recovery for our ailing streams - not an autopsy.
Fraud is not a victimless crime.
-------------------------------------------------------
FOUNDATION
In 1998, Maxxam mortgaged PL's timberlands to bondholders, forcing PL into liquidation logging to finance its debt.
This means Maxxam takes $100 million a year in profits out of Humboldt County.
PL is charged with resorting to fruad in order to sustain their rate of harvest.
So while Maxxam takes the money, PL ruins our streams, floods our homes, and endangers our health and safety.
Our watersheds, our communities, and YOU are paying the price.
Fraud is not a victimless crime.
-------------------------------------------------------
HOW MUCH IS 3 PERCENT?
PL management say they only harvest 3% to 4% of their watershes per year. At that rate, they'll log their entire
property in only 25 - 33 years.
This rate is four times higher than the company's historical average. And after 15 years of PL's destructive
logging, it's as much as 10 times what scientists believe would lead to recovery of our watersheds.
PL's unsustainable logging is clearly destroying our forests, our watersheds, our communities, and the future of our
timber industry.
Fraud is not a victimless crime.
-------------------------------------------------------
THEY DID IT BEFORE
PL is charged with submitting fraudulent data to increase their harvest and their profits.
Sound familiar?
In 1995, a federal judge found Pacific Lumber guilty of submitting false reports in order to log Owl Creek.
In 1998, CDF pulled PL's logging license for covering up their illegal logging in Freshwater.
Since 1996, PL has racked up more than 600 violations of forest practic rules and over 220 water quality violations.
Fraud is not a victimless crime.
