Haiti suspends ties with CARICOM

by repost
HAVANA, March 15 (Xinhuanet) -- Haitian appointed Prime Minister Gerard Latortue announced Monday he temporarily suspended his country's membership in the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) and withdrew Haiti's ambassador from Jamaica, reports from Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince stated.
The announcement was issued after Haiti's former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide arrived in Jamaica from exile in the Central African Republic.

Latortue said he would reconsider Haiti's relations with CARICOM because the bloc had voiced support to Aristide's presidency when considering his ouster was clouded by unclear circumstances.

CARICOM echoed Aristide when he denounced he had been "kidnapped" and forced to leave Haiti by United States troops.

At a Monday press conference, Latortue indicated to "any partner in the world and in the Caribbean community that they can no longer take Haiti for a fool because we are a government that must be taken into account."

Aristide arrived in Jamaica from exile in the Central African Republic with his wife Mildred to meet his two small daughters amid strong security measures.

It remains unknown as how long he is to stay in Jamaica.
