Iraq attackers kill 10 US troops

by BBC
Eight American troops have been killed and four wounded in a car bombing in Iraq, the US military reports.
The attack took place in Mahmoudiya, south of Baghdad, at about 1130 local time (0730GMT).

Thursday also saw two US soldiers killed in two separate attacks in Baghdad and the surrounding area.

More than 120 US troops have been killed in Iraq this month - the bloodiest for American forces since the fall of Saddam Hussein.

The car exploded near a group of US soldiers from the 1st Armoured Division as they were moving through Baghdad's Mahmoudiya suburb, the US military said.

A helicopter flew the injured to a nearby military hospital.

Diminishing support

Elsewhere in Iraq, two US soldiers have been killed in separate attacks by guerrillas.

The US military said one died in a rocket-propelled grenade attack in eastern Baghdad, while the other was killed when a roadside bomb exploded near a convoy close to the town of Baquba, 40km (24 miles) north of the capital.

Thursday also saw a foreign civilian, possibly a South African, killed in a drive-by shooting in the southern city of Basra.

The rising toll of American deaths - and the spiralling cost of the military effort - appear to have dented domestic backing for President George W Bush's Iraq policy, a recent poll suggests.
