Matt Gonzalez: Why to vote for Nader

These days it's popular, particularly in progressive circles, to attack presidential candidate Ralph Nader and his running mate, Peter Camejo.

Votes for Nader would likely otherwise go to Sen. John Kerry, and so the fear is that President Bush will be re-elected -- a possibility that naturally engenders strong feelings. But why is the right solution to attack Nader, who genuinely holds views different from those of Kerry and Bush? After all, Nader and Camejo are simply running for public office in a democracy.

Supervisor and President of the BOS Matt Gonzalez introduced legislation to allow non-citizens who have children in our public schools to vote for the School Board. As of today, the measure has the support of an overwhelming majority in the BOS (including Supervisors Daly, Alioto, McGoldrick, Maxwell, Ammiano, Peskin and Sandoval). The majority of the current School Board members either think it is a "great idea" or are already endorsing the measure.

There is heated electoral rhetoric and fireworks between Democrats and Republicans nowadays. It is no more than logical, as both parties would like, come November, to put a tenant in the White House and control Congress to serve their big donors. Behind the rhetoric, however, is little substance.

George W. Bush is still competitive for the job (and still the President, avoiding impeachment) because of the truce declared by the Democrats above and beyond the call of duty of any legitimate opposition.
