Supervisors to Adjourn Meeting in Memory of Troops Killed in Iraq
Since the invasion of Iraq about 1,105 American soldiers and 139 other “coalition” forces have died. At least 8,016 U.S. troops have been wounded in action. It is estimated that between 13,900 and 16,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed in the fighting.
Today, Supervisors Tom Ammiano, Bevan Dufty, Fiona Ma, Sophie Maxwell, Aaron Peskin, and Jake McGoldrick will join Chris Daly in reading the names of 1065 of the soldiers who have died in Iraq. The meeting will be adjourned in their memory.
“The war in Iraq has meant real death and suffering. There are now over 1000 grieving families in this country and more than 10 times that many in Iraq. I hope that by remembering the names of the dead and sending condolences to their families, we make a small stand against the dehumanization of war.”
