Avenue of the Giants Timber Harvest Plan

by Opposed
Pictures of Maxxam/Pacific Lumber's Timber Harvest Plan near Avenue of the Giants and above 101.
yellow_means_cut.jpg
Maxxam/Pacific Lumber's proposed Timber Harvest Plan is adjacent to Avenue of the Giants and reaches as high as 300 feet in a steep hill above Highway 101 (remember Confusion Hill?). Go here for a fly-over.

Maxxam/PL used yellow lines to show which trees they intend to cut.

This one measured more than 14ft. in diameter.

§On the edge of an old clear-cut

This tree stands on the edge of a previous clear-cut that isn't growing back. If this plan is cut, it will connect with the old clear-cut and spell disaster for Avenue of the Giants, the Eel River and highway 101.
§slump
by Opposed

The steep slope has already started to slide in some places. There are old-growth redwoods above and below this slump.
§Giant Redwood

This tree was marked with blue in a previous Harvest PLan that didn't go through. It's also marked with yellow, and will be cut if the CA Dept. of Forestry gives their stamp of approval.
§Mushrooms

Mushrooms, ferns and thick duff cover the forest floor.

by BEEN A WITNESSFOR 20YRS,
THESE OLD TREES ARE SO SPECIAL,

AND BEYOND THE HUMAN PERSONALITY TROUBLES THAT TRAP US ALL ON A DAILLY BASIS.

I SEE THESE ANCIENT ONES EVERYDAY, AND YES I WOULD SAY I WORSHIP AND LOVE THEM FOR WHO THEY ARE.

THAT PLAN, THP 220 IS A GRAVE MISTAKE.

TAKE CARE PEOPLE, just watching, gravel
by Honeyfoot
I recently attempted to find the area that is slated for cutting under THP 220, but was unable to do so. Any locational markers and/or specifics are most welcome.

I'm not a local and wasn't accompanied by one, but I'm fairly certain I found it.

Travelling south, after Bear Creek there is an obvious pull out on the right, which heads backwards (northwards) along 101. this area along 101 heading up the hill is part of the THP, and you can cross a dry ditch and find a tree with fluorescent reflectors and tape hanging from it, marked Timber Harvest Boundary.

Yes, on 101 heading south, just past the Bear Cr crossing, there is a large pullout on the right side, before you go under a bunch of power lines. everything above this pull out is the THP, and if you hike up towards the top of the hill, which is very steep, you will see these amazing huge trees!!

At the top of the ridge is a huge clearcut about 3 to 5 years old, thanks to PL.

Maxxam Sucks!

Hey - I'm writing because I am planning on making a documentary to garner attention asap on what's going on up there. I live and work in LA as a tv editor and can't stand another reality show. I'm open to hooking up with other filmakers - whatever's helpful. Any info - on tree sits, planned cuts, etc would be helpful. thank you.
