Ramon Peñate Díaz
Community Defenders Network
Ramon Peñate Díaz is a human rights defender from Emiliano Zapata, Chiapas where a Mexican Army camp is located within the community. He will speak about the development and form of the defensive network, his experience, and the impact of ten years of low-intensity warfare on the indigenous communities.

The Community Defenders Network was founded six years ago, in response to the military occupation of indigenous regions of Chiapas by the Mexican Army. The Network is composed of human rights defenders from indigenous and campesino communities who participate in legal training and then return to their communities as advisors on human rights issues and to document incidents affecting those rights. Miguel Pickard
Center for Economic and Political Investigations for Community Action

Miguel Pickard is an investigator, a writer, has spoken at international conferences, and participates in popular education workshops and assemblies. He recently received a Project Censored award for his article on Plan Puebla Panama.

The Center for Economic and Political Research for Community Action (CIEPAC) is a non-profit research group in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas. They investigate and analyze economic and political realities throughout Mexico, Central America and Latin America, such as Plan Puebla Panama, the Free Trade Area of the Americas, and privatization of natural resources.
