SWEATFREE BAY AREA CAMPAIGN KICK OFF

Are the Workers who Make your Clothes “Slaves to Fashion”?

Thursday, March 3, 7:00 PM
New College Theater, 777 Valencia Street
San Francisco

Speakers:
Robert Ross, author of Slaves to Fashion: Poverty and Abuse in the New Sweatshops
Chie Abad, former sweatshop worker
with special guest performances

Learn about historic proposed legislation in San Francisco that would prohibit the city from purchasing sweatshop goods. Find out what you can do to help improve wages and working conditions for sweatshop workers around the world. This is the beginning of an exciting sweat free legislative campaign that will include cities across the Bay Area.

Robert Ross is Professor of Sociology, Faculty Director, and Director of the International Studies Stream at Clark University. He is a leading scholar on sweatshop conditions in the American apparel industry and its relations to sweatshop conditions around the world. His latest work is Slaves to Fashion: Poverty and Abuse in the New Sweatshops .

Carmencita "Chie" Abad spent six years as a garment worker on the Pacific island of Saipan, a U.S. territory. She endured wretched conditions, frequently working 14-hour shifts in order to meet arbitrary production quotas for her employer. Chie was instrumental in forcing 26 major retailers to settle a lawsuit in September 2002 to improve conditions in Saipan.
