Latin American Indigenous Women's Perspectives: From Community to International Organizing

Wednesday, June 1, 2005, 1:30 PM - 3:30 PM
New College of California, 780 Valencia St, San Francisco

As political and economic forces of globalization are spreading, spaces have opened within international discussions. In response, Native peoples have been refining their activism, creating networks and alliances, and affecting far-reaching international policies, while still answering to their home communities.

Speakers:

Tarcila Rivera (Quechua from Peru)
Margarita Gutierrez (Hñañhu from Mexico)
Gloria Ushigua (Zápara from Ecuador)

Opening Prayer by OmeAkaEhekatl Erick Gonzalez (Kaqchikel, Maya from Guatemala)

Our guests will be coming to San Francisco after attending the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues at the United Nations (New York), where they are regular and vocal participants. They will share with us their perspectives on the local-international dynamic of Indigenous organizing for self-determination, as well as offer news and insights from this important UN gathering.

Co-sponsors: UC Davis, Hemispheric Institute on the Americas & Department of Native American Studies; New College Center for Education and Social Action; Global Exchange; and SpiralMuse.

Suggested donation: $5 - $15; no one turned away for lack of funds.
