Adding Insult to Injury.

The first Saturday of every month a group of individuals gather at a busy intersection at Arden and Heritage in Sacramento to protest the Iraq War. On Saturday the 3rd, the week after the final support rally for Cindy Sheehan drew about 40 people. According to Roanna Crisco who attends every Saturday said that this event usually draws about eight to ten people.

Crisco noted that Hurricane Katrina is also helping to bring the problems of the Iraq War to the U.S. because the National Guard and high water vehicles are in Iraq, and that the U.S. is unable to deal with its own problems when they arise. As with Stephen Pearcy, known for his mock soldier hanging from the roof of his house, which gained national attention, noted the same observation. Peacry went on to say that the National Guards who are supposed to be here aren’t, as a result of the back door draft in Iraq. Pearcy, “Its obvious that the antiwar movement is increasing.” About a quarter of all cars that passed by were honking in support of the protesters, while only a few cars that passed shouted in support of George Bush.

A moment of contention occurred when a man approached Crisco who was holding a sign that read “We all want answers” which is in reference to Sheehan and her supporters in Crawford, was approached by a man and his son. The man Paul asked, ”You want answers, have you read the bible?” The exchange flew into a radical free association interpretation of the bible and who reads what and why, never addressing the sign or its origin itself. Paul though arguing for the bible said that,” Jesus claimed to be God.” Crisco replied, “David Koresh also claimed to be God, did Jesus have a better PR person?” Both parties frustrated left only after a few minutes.
