550 Hurricane Dogs Coming to Marin Humane Society
Some of these animals have already arrived. The time is now to offer help locally to these four-legged victims of Katrina.
Marin Humane Society expects to receive 550 dogs from the hurricane rescue efforts. They need volunteers, supplies (including crates) and fosters. Please contact Tricia Breen at tbreen [at] marinhumanesociety.org or call (415) 883-4621 if you can and would like to help.

Talking Points....
"I'm calling to express my concern about the pets still left in the New Orleans area and surrounding parishes. I can't believe they are being left to die."
You can stop right there if you want.
Or you can continue:
2. Ask that your message that the President intervene be passed on to him. Request that the President authorize troops which are not needed for human evacuations or body collection to aid in pet rescue.
(As it stands now, in spite of assurances from General Honore and the governor's office, if a Guardsman enters a home and finds two corpses and one LIVING dog, he is allowed to take the corpses but he is not technically allowed to take the dog. I have no idea how a person can close the door to a home and leave an animal inside in that situation. It's barbaric, really.)
3. Ask that the President pressure Louisiana officials to allow animal welfare groups' rescue teams full access to areas where they know pets were left.
(The groups have logged thousands of calls from people saying, "I left Fluffy in an upstairs bathroom, but I'm not allowed in the area/I've been shipped to Houston and I can't go get her.")
4. Ask that the President pressure local officials to allow animal welfare groups to build additional temporary shelters on property in the Algiers area of Greater New Orleans, as offered by the Louisiana Chapter of the Humane Society (they own the property, but must not be allowed access), and property on the East Bank of New Orleans as requested by the ASPCA.
5. Ask that the President pressure local officials to CEASE FIRE on animals unless an animal poses a threat to human life.
There have been two documented cases of local officers shooting dogs -- one is actually on video and was posted by the Dallas Morning News -- and there are rumors of many more. (Note: Supposedly, our efforts have gotten the videotaped officer suspended from his job.) I realize that it might at first seem humane to shoot an animal which by now must be in miserable condition. HOWEVER, if there is a person there to shoot a gun, that means there is a person there to potentially save a life. As of Saturday, cats being rescued had been holding up pretty well, and dogs were coming in severely dehydrated and emaciated, but still lively enough to wag tails and give rescuers appreciative kisses.
6. LATE ADD-ON: Ask that the President make whatever declarations are necessary in Louisiana and Mississippi to allow that out-of-states veterinarians may treat Katrina’s animal victims.
(An HSUS source was quoted on nola.com as saying the State Veterinarian has told out-of-state vets that all they can do is clean cages and stuff.)
from an animal advocate on NOLA.com:
A John Minnick from the Dept of Homeland Security was helpful to several of us a few days ago. He is the one who told us to BOMBARD THE WHITEHOUSE TOMORROW WITH THOUSANDS OF CALLS. John is FINALLY down in Louisiana. He was sent there last night by his bosses. He and I just finshed speaking. He told me not to give up. He said that the problem is the Governor. She needs to hear from the Whitehouse and DHS that the dogs must be rescued. THE ONLY WAY THIS WILL OCCUR IS IF WE ALL CALL THE WHITEHOUSE.
Just know that the Governor has DONE NOTHING to help animals. This is straight from John and also apparent from my several conversations with people on her inner staff - Andy Copland, "terry" and others. She is useless and will not act without SIGNIFICANT PRESSURE FROM WASHINGTON, WHICH FIRST REQUIRES US TO LIGHT UP THE WHITEHOUSE SWITCHBOARD. As John put it, even if we can now only save 25% of what we could have saved Friday, it's better than nothing. The DOD wants to help. It is killing the fed guys down there not to be able to make animal rescue a priority.
here's the text of the email i sent for example:
I'm writing regarding the dire situation of animals in New Orleans and the Gulf area.
I am extremely upset that troops who come across living animals in their search for the dead have not been allowed to take the animals out.
I also ask that you authorize troops (who are not needed for human evacuations) to aid in pet rescue, which is only being done by small numbers of organizations and volunteers.
I also urge you to pressure Louisiana officials to allow animal welfare groups' rescue teams full access to areas where they know pets were left. It is outrageous that pets are trapped in attics, etc. and that people who want to rescue them are not being allowed access to all areas.
I also saw the horrible video of the sheriff shooting dogs, and ask that you please pressure local officials to NOT shoot animals in the streets unless they pose a threat to human life. These animals have suffered enough!
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

from a newsgroup: I'm in contact with someone on the grounds who is rescueing. We need to let FEMA know that what they "aren't" doing is not acceptable.
Ask them: Why is the government not letting trained animal rescuers go in all areas? If they are concerned about looting, why do they not give them an escort. Why would they not just frisk a rescuer when they are leaving an area instead of refusing to let them in an area?
Rescuers are having to pass by areas where animals are visible in windows. Military personal are stationed in areas where pets are stuck in houses and apartment buildings. They are just following their orders, but these pets sit in the houses without food and water, while humans can see them through windows. What's the point in that?
Rescuers in this particular area are estimating pet deaths at 30,000. Pets still alive are also estimated at 30,000. These are loose estimates from rescuers who are out there seeing everything. Animals who will not wait to be rescued are swimming in that water and past the bodies of other dead animals to try to get to boats.

from a newsgroup:
I'm in contact with rescuers on the grounds. It's disgraceful. I have made my call to the white house and FEMA.
Things are really bad there. TV is not telling the story. They are telling you how good things are looking there now. Phil Keating on CNN was standing on dry ground acting like everything is fine. It's not fine for the animals and pet rescuers. They go out to save pets in houses and buildings, but come across pets in the streets that are swimming through that water to get to them because they are so desperate to help. The pets in the houses are not being saved. 10's of thousands are still out there needing to be rescued. 10's of thousands are dead already. Soldiers are looking at pets in windows and make the comment about how sad it is. They are supposed to follow their orders. Saving pets is not their orders. The rescue teams can see some pets, but can't get to them because FEMA will not let them in certain areas. They seem to be worried about looting and health issues. This is a disgrace.
One of my contacts was dropping off supplies to a Tylertown, MS rescue shelter. An animal control officer with a badge was upset because 2 boats weren't being used, and she was qualified to rescue.
We need to speak for those animals. More die everyday because of this craziness. FEMA makes the animal rescuers cease rescuing between 6 & 7 pm. A rescue team saw a house full of pets. They knew the pets were in bad shape, but they were not allowed to get them. They had to wait until the next day. Well, the next day there was only one left alive and he was in bad shape.
Make those phone calls. When you do, ask FEMA what was their plan when they knew there would be 30,000+ pets needing rescuing.
Tell them we want teams out walking the streets to get these pets. They were able to get the people out, now it's time to get the pets out. White House 202-456-1111 FEMA 225-267-2500 I'm asking everyone to email the white house and FEMA. Simply say "We demand mandatory pet evacuations"
