Council OKs ban on marijuana clubs
Central Contra Costa's only medicinal marijuana dispensary must shut
down now that the Concord City Council has approved a permanent ban
against such clubs.
The dispensary MariCare has been open since earlier this year on
Colfax Street. Its patients will have to go to Berkeley, Oakland or
other cities with clubs for marijuana.
Concord city staff had recommended the council adopt the ordinance,
which was proposed following a Supreme Court opinion stating that
federal laws outweigh all other laws. This includes Proposition 215,
which allows the use of marijuana for medical purposes.
The council on Tuesday night voted unanimously in favor of the ban.
City leaders introduced the ordinance at its Sept. 6 meeting, where
they heard more than two hours of public comment from medical
marijuana users unhappy with the proposed ban.
