EBAA Announces Foster Farms Week of Action Across Northern California

by East Bay Animal Advocates
Jan. 5th begins seven days of compassion at Costco
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, Jan. 3, 2006 – Beginning Thursday, January 5 (National Bird Day), East Bay Animal Advocates (EBAA) will launch a new campaign focusing on another Foster Farms retailer: Costco. EBAA will expose Foster Farms' inhumane treatment of animals outside Costco locations across northern California.

Foster Farms allegedly adheres to the National Chicken Council's “Animal Welfare Guidelines.” Moreover, the company’s print, oral and Internet advertising lead consumers to believe that Foster Farms chickens are raised in a humane manner and in natural, clean environments. Investigations carried out by EBAA contradict these claims and reveal that the actual conditions at Foster Farms include inadequate veterinary care, high on-farm stocking density and unsanitary living quarters.

Costco Wholesale Corporation is the largest membership warehouse club chain in the world and remains one of the top retailers of Foster Farms products.

In an effort to raise the public’s awareness about Foster Farms’ role in the inhumane treatment of chickens, EBAA members will be distributing informative literature regarding Foster Farms to shoppers at seven Costco locations in northern California beginning on January 5th, which is also the fourth-annual National Bird Day.
