The Slaughter of an Exhausted Whale Calf

by Takver
The Japanese whaling fleet has recommenced the whale hunt and slaughter after an absence of 11 days. In that time the fleet has fled over 3,000 nautical miles from the far east of the whaling area to the far west. Greenpeace activists again disrupted the whale hunt on 5 January by enabling many whales to escape. Andrew, from the Greenpeace ship, Esperanza, tells the story of one hunt and how the harpoonist needed only one good shot. Eventually an exhausted whale calf was hit by the grenade tipped harpoon.

The whale hunt was last disrupted by activists from two Greenpeace ships on the 21 and 22 December. After this, the Nisshin Maru factory ship and the other whaling vessels took off at full speed, chased by the Greenpeace ships, Esperanza and Arctic Sunrise. The Sea Shepherd vessel, the Farley Mowat, intercepted the Nisshin Maru on the 25 December, with the Japanese factory ship threatening to ram the Sea Shepherd ship.

The Japanese Whaling Fleet refueled inside the Antarctic Treaty area watched by Greenpeace activists on board the Esperanza. The whaling fleet then sailed south to recommence the whale hunt and slaughter. For 24 hours Greenpeace lost track of the fleet, but contact has been made again, with 10 whale carcasses seen strung from the side of the fleet's factory ship.

Shane Rattenbury of Greenpeace said "There is a lot of public pressure [and] significant catching up to do so we expect there'll be quite an aggressive response from the whalers when we do continue with our protest and intervention in their hunting," he said.

Protesters are preparing to harass the hunter ships by positioning their small inflatable zodiacs in front of the harpoon and using portable pumps to spray a wall of water to frustrate the aim of the harpoonists. Mr Rattenbury said they had other tactics available to disrupt the whaling operation, but would not elaborate. "We've got a few tricks up our sleeve yet," he said, according to a report in The Australian.

Andrew, on board the Esperanza, described how Greenpeace disrupted the hunt today, 5 January, in a blog entry Everybody goes back to work:

"Greenpeace At 08:50 we saw them bring in their first whale. We were ready, but we waited. Then they brought in a second. We put the Billy Greene in the water - Cat driving, Joe, Yuko and Alain as crew. And the Esperanza moved closer. But still we waited. Then came our old friend the Kyo Maru to deliver the whale, and we stopped waiting.

For the rest of the morning and into the afternoon the Billy Greene, later joined by the Mermaid, dogged the Kyo while it hunted. Twisting and turning, going in circles, chasing one whale after another while Cat kept her boat in position - a spray thrown straight up from the stern by the boat's fire pump. For almost two and a half hours it continued. It's impossible to describe the level of concentration this sort of driving requires. Looking forwards for the whale, looking back for the hunter, your crew shouting advice. Whale after whale escaped. Some were mothers and calves.

In the end the harpooner only needs one good shot. It wasn't until the fire pump ran out of fuel, that they got one. The Mermaid moved in and still held the Kyo off. The crew on the Billy G had just got the pump going again and was out in front when the gunner hit an exhausted calf at close range.

So it goes here in the internationally recognized Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.

In a statement released on the Institute of Cetacean Research website, Director General, Dr Hiroshi Hatanaka, said “While unlikely to go unheeded, we warn these groups again to keep their distance from our research vessels and to refrain from any impulsive and reckless stunts. To protect their safety and that of our crews we will continue to use the water cannons as a deterrent and a safety measure,” he said.

Shane Rattenbury, for Greenpeace said the sea surface was almost flat with the air temperature around zero degrees Celsius, and snow flurries. He said that they would not be deterred by the Japanese use of water cannon. "Our actions are peaceful and non-violent. They can turn the water cannons on us if they want to but we will still keep trying to stop the whales being killed,"

"Nonetheless, we were only able to cover one catcher boat today. There's three in the fleet so we haven't succeeded in catching (up with them). At last count, (they caught) six minke whales today." Mr Rattenbury said.

The research by the Japanese whaling fleet has been widely discredited, with scientific whaling being used to cover the commercial slaughter of whales for consumption on the Japanese restaurant market. Japan has increased its quota of whales to be slaughtered this year to 935 minke and 10 of the endangered fin whale.

Norway's government, following a unanimous recommendation by the Storting (Norwegian parliament), increased the kill quota to 1,052 minke whales in 2006, up from a record-high quota of 796 in 2005, in defiance of the International Whaling Commission moratorium established in 1986. Iceland resumed whale hunting under the 'scientific research' loophole in 2003 and killed 39 minkes last year and is expected to hunt a similar number in 2006.

In an example of How to study whales without slaughter and consumption, Australia's Antarctic Division flagship, Aurora Australis, left Fremantle Harbour 2nd January 2006 for a three month journey through the Southern Ocean. More than 60 scientists from 12 nations, including Japan, are taking part in a $7 million Australian-led research voyage to study whales, ocean salinity, temperature and depth as pointers to climate change and determining the health of krill populations in the areas visited.

The whaling fleet is currently located near Antarctica, south of the Australian territory of Heard Island, about 4,000km south-west of Perth.

Thanks for the good post! This has been going on for weeks now and the US media isn't covering it at all (no surprise I guess). Thank the Gods for Indymedia and the folks that post the hidden news.
by Lover of japanese people!
The Japanese people are good. They themselves are horrified at the destuction wrought in their name by their stupid heartless government. Historically the Japanese have been an heroic spartan people with deep religious bhuddist principles including respect for life.
They only ones supporting this cruel slaughter are the egomaniacs of the Japanese elite(Not People) and the cowardice of the Australian and New Zealand governments. The latter have their fisherie protection vessels dinking about in the persian gulf on the "War on Terror".

It's time for the Japanese Elite to leave the Japanese people in peace and stop trying to stuff screaming mammalian whale meat down their gulping maws.

So come on Australia and NZ what is needed is a POLICE ACTION OF ARREST so Jap whalers may be retired comfortably for ever and ever. Preferably in Tokyio!!!
God in Australia and New Zealand as in Japan is wealth, the good life, money travel and all the rest. So how could the welfare of whales even come onto the radar screens at all ? Nobody here gives a shit about whales they are just economic fodder to support our life standards.
So the previous commentator to say the Australian and New Zealand governments are cowards suggests they care!
They don't care! the whales have been sold for thirty pieces of silver as Judas sold Jesus and the Australian and New Zealand governments stand exposed to cynicsm ,cowardice and despicable money grubbing.I'll just be sick in a corner folks.O.K.Feeling a bit better now.
So what can we do about a world so cruel and heartless as this?
I don't know but if you thought that Australia and New Zealand had high principles for whales think again These countries have opted for the dollar and selfish wealth :these countries no longer have any respect as to whales they have made their choice as Judas did!

The IWc is an outrageous farce which is being treated as such by Japan which is now conducting commercial whaling and intending to hunt protected species like the humpback, next year, which Australians love to sea breaking out of the oceans off their shores.

Japan is criminally bribing members of the IWC,small island states,to support their whale killing programme. That is to vote with Japan on the IWC.

The answer? .... Australia and New Zealand supported by naval force, police action, must declare unilaterally to the world that the southern ocean is off limits to any whaling nation and this declaration will be enforced.

The IWC is a bureaucrats paradise it doesn't protect whales but makes paper shufflers rich and enables countries as Japan to laugh all the way down the killing chain.

The Japanese will back down they need the USA too much:so there's nothing stopping us doing this .

The Israelis are famous for assertive pluck that's all we need .

Let's rid our seas of these arrogant killers once and for all and LET THE WHALES LIVE! ALLELUHA!

by Australian
As reported in the Australian feature "What a catch" claims Greens
Senator Bob Brown ""The Prime Minister is working very hard to get an FTA with both Japan and China in this term of Government. He has a very close relationship with Prime Minister KOIzumi and he doesn't want to risk that for a few whales".

Let me tell John Howard the Japanese have no concept of mateship.A mate would say:yes we'll refrain from commercial whaling because you are my MATE!. But Japan has not done this John Howard is being shafted for his Free TRade Agreement and shown as a money oriented prostitute by Japan .They are not I repeat not his mates!!!

So it's time for John Howard to stand up as an Australian man and give these Bastards the boot! It's time for him to stop selling the bodies of whales for economic priveleges that will never come. Koizumi wouldn't even know what mateship is!
by Brisbane
John is so servile, for trade reasons you know, That Japan can do what ever it wants including slaughtering all our whale stocks down south, isn't that loyalty, for money of course, folks:Money is EVERYTHING now the STANDARD OF LIVING AND GOD HELP US WE MUST KEEP GROWING!!!

So this pathetic little Australian Bureaucrat doesn't even have an inkling about preserving whales it doesn't even flit through is money oriented mind:a mind long ago that felt love and life and passion but now serves its master,in this case, Japan which doesn't relpy, but recognising a vassal takes from its vassal that which it needs.

How could a proud nation come to this? Why its the prostitution of all normal values to the value of money, growth ever increasing wealth ,me and me the natural world shall be exploited to the hilt for this! I'll sell my soul, whales or anything else for a bigger house, more income, more assets ,bigger cars, more status, sexier women flights round the world!

And all the while the natural world, the biosphere groans with agony and decline at our never ceasing demands.
Dear Paul
You and Sea Shepherd are true heroes. But You have not had the support from the Australian and New Zealand Governments ,you might have hoped for.
Let me say that the independent comments you have seen attached to indymedia Bay area must have made crystal clear why these governments are useless.
They have sold their self respect and valour for money and the "standard of living and growth". If they did not do this the ordinary people would vote them out.
Trade with Japan increases wealth and economic power:so that is why the whales are being slaughtered :so we can have more humans and a higher standared of consumption.

So,Sea Shepherd you are heroes because you don't subscribe to destroying the biosphere for money and unecessary human numbers.

But the gap in vision between you and Australian and New Zealand Governments<WHo have no pride other than filthy lucre, is a gap of almost a different universe!

Money grubbing selfishness and more money is the way here there is no Homerian tragedy no hector against achilles for real principles: Just money, growth, money, growth, and anything is sacrificed for this!

So Paul Watson don't call on Australia and New Zealand in future :You're the only hero they don't believe at all except in currency.

So will you despair?

You may stlill be the Hector or Achilles of the whales you may still be Homerian though the rubbish filthy lucres laugh at your idealism before their miserable system crashes with the end of cheap oil.
