Mayoral Candidates' Homes Bombed in Nepal
The homes of three mayoral candidates loyal to Nepal's king were bombed Thursday, a week before nationwide municipal elections that insurgents have called a sham and vowed to disrupt.
The candidates were unharmed in the attack because they were in hiding from the communist rebels, who have threatened to attack anyone running in the elections.
King Gyanendra, who disbanded parliament and seized absolute power last year, has touted the elections as a step toward restoring democracy. The rebels and the Himalayan country's main political parties have called the elections a ploy to legitimize his power seizure.
Media rights groups, meanwhile, condemned the beating and detention of journalists demonstrating against media restrictions imposed by the king.

The bomber, thought to be a member of the Taliban, detonated a car packed with explosives in Afghanistan, killing three government soldiers and wounding three, police said on Thursday.
The attack occurred at a checkpoint in the southeastern province of Khost on Wednesday when Afghan soldiers and US troops were checking vehicles, a police official said.
Mohammad Zaman, a senior provincial police official, told reporters that apart from the suicide bomber, three national army soldiers were also killed in the attack.
But Mohammed Ayub, the regional police chief, said three soldiers, the driver of the vehicle and a farmer working nearby were killed along with the bomber.
It was not clear whether the driver was an associate of the assailant or an innocent victim. Three soldiers were wounded, as well as a second farmer.

The attack against Afghan soldiers guarding a road construction site in southeastern Khost province late Wednesday was the latest in a spate of around 25 suicide blasts around the country in the past four months.
The explosives-filled car blew up after it was stopped at an army checkpoint in the province’s Bak district, a provincial police official said on condition of anonymity.
“As soon as the car was stopped, the person dressed as a woman started shouting to attract attention,” he said. “When the soldiers and roadworkers came close to the car, the explosion took place.”
It killed three Afghan soldiers and two civilian roadworkers, one of whom was a tractor driver, he said. Another tractor driver was wounded, he said.
The defence ministry said only one civilian was killed and the car had been driven into an army convoy near the construction site.
“Three soldiers and one civilian were martyred and three soldiers were wounded in the car bomb suicide attack,” ministry spokesman General Mohammad Zahir Azimi said.
