Coexistence Can Work: A Talk by Dorothy Naor from JVFP - Sunnyvale

Sunnyvale church, Rm 501
728 W. Fremont Ave
Near the corner of Hollenback and W. Fremont (Take 280 N to 85 N. Exit at Fremont Ave. and go east. Right into parking lot off W. Fremont before Hollenback)

Dorothy Naor, of New Profile, an Israeli feminist and anti-militarist organization, will speak at our general meeting on March 16 at 7:00 p.m. The program is endorsed by the SJ Womens International League for Peace and Freedom, the Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church Pilgrims of Ibillin, and Tikkun.

Dorothy Naor was born in San Francisco, California in 1932, and grew up in the Bay Area. She met her Israeli husband when he came to study at UC Berkeley in the early 1950s. They and their three children made Israel their home in 1958. They have lived periodically in additional countries, due to professional reason. Dorothy earned a Ph.D. in English Literature from Tel Aviv University in Israel, and has been an English teacher for most of her professional life.

The past 5 years much of her time has been spent in activism against the Occupation. She is a member of New Profile, a pluralist feminist organization of males and females that seeks to transform Israel from a militaristic society to a civil one. New Profile supports refusal to serve in the military, opposes the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, and supports selective divestment from companies that contribute to maintaining the occupation. Dorothy's principal activity in New Profile is to inform by distributing materials to the NP alternative information email list. She aims to inform also in other ways, e.g., by giving presentations, and by taking people on tours of villages in the Salfit governate of the West Bank to give some intimation of what it is like to be Palestinian living walled-in and under occupation.

Coexistence Can Work

1. My presentation does not attempt to prove the title. It rather expresses my deepest belief, the foundation for everything that I say.

2. The introduction touches briefly (a) the organization that I represent: New Profile, it's character, aim, and means, (b) a few pertinent characteristics of militarism, (c) a few historical facts that are not frequently mentioned, but that nevertheless point to some roots of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

3. The Body of the Pres entation will deal with the deleterious impact of the Occupation (a) on Israelis, and (b) on Palestinians

(a) For Israelis the impact resides in the economic sphere, the devaluation of human life, and a steady increase in militarism.

(b) For the Palestinians the impact resides likewise in the devaluation of human life and the economic sphere, but additionally resides in the loss of land, uprooting of trees, demolition of homes and other buildings, loss of freedoms (e.g., of movement), total loss of security, etc.

4. In conclusion, the occupation is deleterious for Israelis and Palestinians alike. One non-violent means to help end the occupation is the use of economic means to pressure the Israeli government, e.g., divestment (selective or other) or boycott.

Monday, March 20: Third Anniversary of the "Shock and Awe" Invasion of Iraq

Youth & Student Day of Resistance to Imperialism

Visit http://en.groundspring.org/EmailNow/pub.php?module=URLTracker&cmd=track&j=66257788&u=611329 to list or find community or campus actions on March 20.

This is not our war. The Bush administration has sent hundreds of thousands of young people to be killed in a war for Empire. The war and occupation of Iraq cannot be seen in isolation. The U.S. is actively attempting to destroy every government that resists the Empire. People in Iraq, in Palestine, in Haiti, in Venezuela, in Cuba, in the Philippines are resisting, but the people of the United States must become their allies. Their resistance is part of the universal aspiration to live free from foreign domination or threats of a military or economic character.

The U.S., on the contrary, has nearly 10,000 nuclear weapons, has a military budget of $500 billion per year, constituting half of all arms production in the world. The U.S. government is the only one in the world that has ever used nuclear weapons, which it did against the civilian cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. More than 100,000 Iraqis have died since March 2003. Their country has been destroyed. Electricity, food, medicine, drinkable water all the things necessary to sustain life are now in a state of ruin. More than 2,000 U.S. soldiers have been killed and 20,000-30,000 have been horribly wounded. The U.S. government has spent $300 billion to carry out this war of aggression; that comes to more than $300 million every day.

While the Bush administration and Congress allocate limitless resources for their war for Empire, these so-called elected representatives of the people are carrying out massive cutbacks in Medicaid, Medicare, tuition aid, food stamps and other vital social programs. Of the $50 billion in projected cutbacks in the coming fiscal year, more than one-third are targeting programs designed to help young people, especially education programs.

This is a racist war. The Bush administration has targeted and demonized Arab and Muslim peoples. It is a racist war too because it constitutes a systematic diversion of resources from African American, Latino and other oppressed communities directly into the coffers of the corporate and banking establishment through the agency of military spending.

Now is a critical time for youth and students to join the anti-war movement. Join actions at San Jose State, UC Berkeley, Sonoma State, Laney College, and other campuses around the SF Bay Area on March 20 for the youth and student day of resistance to imperialism. For more information on these action or to get involved, contact Youth & Student A.N.S.W.E.R. at 415 821 6545 or answer [at] actionsf.org.

For more info about this march, visit http://en.groundspring.org/EmailNow/pub.php?module=URLTracker&cmd=track&j=66257788&u=611337

OBJECTIVE: A 241-mile march that aims at ensuring that the Latino voice of opposition to the war is heard loud and clear across the Americas.

Latinos represent nearly 15% of the US population and 11% of the U.S. military, with many serving in combat or hazardous duty occupations. In addition, an estimated 20% of the fallen service members in the early months of the invasion were Latino. With the continued growth of the Latino population and its vital importance to the future of this country, it is time for the Latino community to become an active and vocal part of the 60%+ of U.S. citizens that oppose this war. It is also time to show the Latino community that they have a voice and a right to fight for peace and stability. Fernando Suarez Del Solar is committed to self-sacrifice. At 50 years of age, he cares more about ending this war than even his own health. We make this call not only to the Latino population but to all those who agree with our message "No more bloodshed in Iraq."

Peace Umbrella of Unitarian Universalist Church of Palo Alto (http://en.groundspring.org/EmailNow/pub.php?module=URLTracker&cmd=track&j=66257788&u=611340)

Persistent massive unemployment has left millions of Central Americans desperately impoverished, with little choice but to migrate to jobs in Canada and the U.S. It is estimated that 3,000 a day embark on the treacherous overland journey north, and fewer than 300 ever make it. Wetback is a powerful record of the journey of five Nicaraguans, with no documents and little money, as they make their way north. The obstacles they face are tremendous and life threatening, from corrupt Mexican border police and vicious Mexican gangs, to dangerously overcrowded freight trains and fast-moving rivers. Those who make it into the U.S. face armed white supremacist vigilante groups who patrol the border to prevent illegal entry. Some make it, some don't; all suffer greatly. "Wetback" is an exemplary committed documentary that offers crucial human insights into the politics of poverty, the forces of repression and the will to survive. (90 min, 2004)

U.S. Premiere - New Documentary on the Iraq War: 'In the Shadow of the Palms' - San Francisco

7 p,m,
Victoria Theater
16th St between Capp and Mission
near 16th St BART

The feature-length documentary film on the Iraq war "In the Shadow of the Palms" has been described as a "humane and profoundly authentic" portrayal of the struggles of the people of Iraq through this tumultuous war. The film documents the lives of ordinary people preparing for the war in the months leading up to the invasion and shows the brutal and indiscriminant 'shock and awe' bombing of Baghdad. The filmmaker returns to document how the peoples' lives have changed under the US-led occupation.

Democracy or Imperialism? A Dissection of U.S. Policy in the Middle East - Fremont

6:30 p.m.
Fukaya Room
Fremont Main Library,
2400 Stevenson Blvd

The policy of the United States towards the Iranian nuclear program,
The seemingly endless U.S. imbroglio in Iraq,
Israel's occupation of Palestinian lands and the Hamas victory in the Palestinian elections,
The situation in Syria and Lebanon in the aftermath of the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri and the Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon.
Find out how all these elements are connected within the broader Middle Eastern situation and how they are related to events elsewhere in the world, including here at home.

Richard Becker, veteran activist with InternationalANSWER recently returned from the Middle East, and Hatem Bazian, Palestinian professor of Islamic Studies at U.C. Berkeley, dissect the policies of the United States in this strategically vital area, present a compelling argument as to why the Bush Administration is pursuing these policies, and outline a prognosis for the future.
