Evon Peter was elected chief of the Neetsaii Gwich'in people in his early twenties. The Gwich'in are the indigenous people of Alaska and Canada whose way of life depends on the Porcupine Caribou herd, whose calving grounds are part of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Evon and the Gwich'in have worked for decades to protect this sacred area. Since gaining power in 2000 the Bush Administration have been relentless in their hell-bent mission to open up the Alaskan Refuge to oil drilling and development. The March for Sacred Sites and Human Rights in Flagstaff Arizona is on March 25th will unite students, immigrant-rights and indigenous-rights sturggles. Evon Peter is also chairman and executive director of Native Movement in Flagstaff.
