Got Roadless? Oxygen Collective's roadless show coming to Arcata 6/4
The Final chapter of the saga of the Biscuit Burn is still unwritten. Ecologists prove logging it is unhealthy, firefighters warn it's dangerous, economists assure it's wasteful. Dozens of arrests have stymied the threat to a fraction of their promise. Still, Bush and Big Timber come back for more - this time Kalmiopsis Roadless Areas auctioned off under the guise of salvage!
The Oxygen Collective is directly challenging the Bush Administration's rapidly advancing plans to salvage log forests in Oregon's largest unprotected roadless areas this summer. For three days more days in June we will be traveling through south western Oregon & northern California for three scheduled appearances and a few unannounced surprises. The Oxygen Collective has been at the forefront of both public education and popular protest of Biscuit logging. We will be offering a free multi-media presentation reviewing the Biscuit saga up to now and highlighting how the latest logging proposals will create detrimental national precedents. This will be conveyed in a high energy show featuring music, video, speakers and slides of direct action for the biscuit. Featuring the films Keep Towing That Line, and Portland IMC's Truth & Lies of the Biscuit Fire.
The US Forest Service recently revealed its plans to salvage log the Blackberry and Mike's Gulch timber sales which surround the Kalmiopsis Wilderness in Southern Oregon's Biscuit Burn. In one fell swoop, this administration has brought together the nation's three top logging issues into one highly vulnerable package.
1) Protests of the Biscuit scheme have made this the nation's most controversial logging project in years. Still one year after the protests began, national media continues to cover the issue.
2) Unraveling roadless area protections has been this administration's top timber priority for the last five years. Revoking the Clinton rule and breaking his promise made to Governors, the Biscuit is now slated for Bush's first roadless logging project in the entire country.
3) This summer Congress is taking up proposals which would quash environmental law by allowing "salvage" logging with little public oversight. In November, Representative Greg Walden introduced a bill, called the "Forest Emergency Recovery and Research Act" (HR4200) that overruns protections for forests, fish and wildlife in order to rush logging and roadbuilding after normal, natural events that occur in national forests. This bill is damaging to our forest ecosystems and cannot be defended as scientifically credible.
