Fox News Joins San Francisco POA in Peddling the Big Lie

by Randy Shaw, Beyond Chron (reposted)
As national Republicans sought a strategic response to their colleague Mark Foley’s sexual predator scandal, the O’Reilly Factor on Fox News came up with the easiest answer: identify Foley as a Democrat. The photo on the left is not a glitch, as O’Reilly’s show identified Foley as a Democrat three times without correction. Lies work in politics, as President Bush well knows. San Francisco’s Police Officers Association appears to share Bush’s view that lies bring political success. This election season the POA is again promoting a completely misleading photo of Supervisor Chris Daly yelling at a police officer. Just as Fox News knows that Foley is a Republican, the POA has previously been informed that the only reason Daly was yelling was that the officer was twisting Daly’s arm, and he was yelling at him to stop. But like Fox News, and our President, the POA sees more political mileage in falsifying the incident for its own ends.
Republicans once argued that the President sets the moral tone for the nation. This may explain Fox News’ deceitful effort to convince viewers that former Congressman Mark Foley was a Democrat, and the San Francisco POA’s misrepresentations of the Chris Daly photo---after all, if the President misrepresents the facts without apologies, why shouldn’t they?

I was standing next to Chris Daly when the now infamous photo of him and the police officer was taken. Daly had joined our nonviolent civil disobedience against Hastings Law School’s construction of an 885-space parking garage at Golden Gate and Larkin Streets.

§Spending Limits Lifted in District 6
by Paul Hogarth, Beyond Chron (reposted)
On Friday afternoon, the San Francisco Ethics Commission determined that more than $83,000 has been spent in independent expenditures in the race between Supervisor Chris Daly and challenger Rob Black. Candidates for local office can agree to a voluntary spending limit of $83,000 in exchange for public matching funds. However, if more than that amount is used against a candidate, the Ethics Commission can decide to lift the cap.

"Through evaluation of a variety of campaign materials being distributed throughout District Six, we have determined that independent expenditures, costs for electioneering communications and member communications have exceeded the voluntary spending cap," said John St. Croix, Executive Director of the Ethics Commission. "There have been mass mailings, signage, door hangers, polls, web sites, numerous handouts and fliers, windshield drops, at least one with first-class return postage affixed, staff and legal costs, independent printing and other expenses."
