San Jose Mayoral Candidates Address Concerns of Ethnic Communities
SAN JOSE – Voters in San Jose, Calif. go to the polls Nov. 7 to elect their next mayor, nearly five months after San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzalez was arrested on felony charges. In this city, located about 50 miles south of San Francisco, there is no single ethnic majority: Hispanics represent 32.1 percent of the population, Asian and Pacific Islanders 28.7 percent, African Americans 2.8 percent and whites 33.3 percent. New America Media asked San Jose mayoral candidates Cindy Chavez and Chuck Reed about where they stand on some of the issues that matter most to these communities that, together, account for two thirds of the city’s population.
Questions were crafted with help from 10 community organizations to address immigration, education, health care, the environment and housing. The organizations included: Asian Pacific American Legal Center (APALC), California Pan-Ethnic Health Network (CPEHN), Center for Community Action and Environmental Justice (CCAEJ), Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), Flex Your Power, Greenlining Institute, Hewlett Foundation, UCLA's Institute for Democracy, Education, and Access (IDEA), Latino Issues Forum and PolicyLink.
